Volume 16 · Letter 278 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu

By the grace of Hashem*,

13 Shevat* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav Nathan David (note 1: Rav N. D. Rosenblum, of Buenos Aires. See, on his subject, Letter no. 4658),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I have received your letter from this Sunday and, at a propitious moment, I will mention your name and that of your wife, in accordance with your request, at the holy resting place of the one whose Hilloula* we have just celebrated (note 2: On 10 Shevat), my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us.

You ask me about the Tikunei Zohar*, at the beginning of Tikun* 69, page 99b, which states: "Furthermore, Adam knew... whereas it is written, elsewhere: I have acquired my man." You question this statement, for the Torah* specifies that these words were spoken by Chavah*. The Gaon of Vilna* indeed corrects the text: "She said: I have acquired my man," but this correction is difficult to accept, for this passage of the Tikunei Zohar*, in its entirety, speaks of Adam and it is indeed stated: "Adam knew," "He became conscious of his sin," "He knew the impurity," "He observed the sphere." All these expressions are in the masculine. It would, of course, be surprising to express them all in the feminine.

In my view, here is the explanation that can be given in this matter. It is indeed Chavah* who said: "I have acquired my man," and it is on this basis that his name was decided. Nevertheless, this could not be done without the agreement of Adam, which was essential. The Tikunei Zohar* therefore explains why he accepted this name. You will consult the commentary Daas Zekeinim* of the Tosafists*, Bereishis* 38:5, which states: "I heard from my master that such was their custom. He chose the name of their first son and she, that of the second," but the Ramban* contests this manner of proceeding.
