Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6049 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 16 · Letter 277 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem*,
13 Shevat* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav Menachem Nachum (note 1: Rav M. N. Feldman, of Omaha),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
Through the intermediary of the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, who devotes himself to communal needs, who accumulates numerous achievements, Rav Shmuel HaLevi Raytchik, emissary of the Sages (note 2: Emissary of the Rebbe in California), I received your request for a blessing, for yourself and for your son Shabtai. At a propitious moment, I will mention your names at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, so that you obtain the fulfillment of your needs, in accordance with what is stated in this request for a blessing. It is surely unnecessary to specify to you that, the more one adds to the Torah* and the mitzvos*, the more the One Who gives the Torah*, Who commands the mitzvah*, Who directs the world, Who extends His providence to each one, will multiply His blessings, in order to satisfy the needs of the person and of the members of his family.
One of the essential points, in this matter, is the love of one's fellow, which is, according to Rabbi Akiva*, "a great principle of the Torah*." Such is also the content of this week's Parashah*, that of Yisro* and the giving of the Torah*, as the holy Zohar* explains. Indeed, when could the Torah* be given? Only after Yisro* recognized: "Now I know that Hashem* is greater than all the gods," thereby introducing the contribution of light that comes from darkness. Now, the same applies at every era, for the Torah* is given each day — "they (note 3: The words of the Torah) shall be each day as new in your eyes." And, the blessing states: "Blessed are You, Hashem*, Who gives the Torah*," in the present tense. It is therefore fitting to separate the grain from the chaff, in one's fellow or in oneself, in a more refined manner. Each person, according to his situation, must repel the evil. And, you will also consult the Tanya*, chapter 27, page 34b, which states: "They starved themselves for two hours, with this intention."
You surely have knowledge of the three studies pertaining to the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*, which are well known. We have heard many times from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, that these concern every person and that they exercise a beneficial effect in various domains. At the very least, you will adopt them in the future.
With my respects and my blessing to convey good news of all this,
