Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6045 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 16 · Letter 273 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem*,
9 Shevat* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, descended from an illustrious family, Rav Yaakov* (note 1: Rav Y. Werdiger),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I received with pleasure, in due time, the Siddur* you have published, the prayer book Tzelosa D'Avraham*, vol. 1, with remarks and notes presenting references on prayer and its customs. I found therein an immense reservoir of explanations on this subject. Now, our Sages*, in Tractate Berachos* 6b, define prayer as an accomplishment of immense value. One can deduce from this the importance of every detail that constitutes it. Furthermore, Rashi*, commenting on the expression "accomplishment of immense value," emphasizes that this accomplishment furthermore receives elevation. This is why the very first Sages were very careful about every point of the prayer, every word. The Tur*, chapter 113, underscores that: "they weighed and counted every word of the prayers and blessings."
As you also know, the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, considered it a particular merit to have established and finalized the text of the prayer in his Siddur*. And the Chassidim* recount that in composing it, he had before him sixty rituals, from which he drew a synthesis (note 2: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5675). Now, it is even more important to cite the references of the prayer in our era, for if Tractate Berachos* observes that in those times prayer was neglected, how much more so is this the case in our orphaned generation, and sometimes this negligence reaches such proportions that anyone presumes himself capable of establishing the prayer text as he sees fit, of changing its formulation, of shortening it, of omitting passages, and moreover of introducing new prayers that our ancestors and the ancestors of our ancestors never even imagined.
The verse (Koheles* 5:1) warns, in a clear and decisive manner: "Let your mouth not hasten, and let your heart not rush to utter a word before Hashem*." And you will consult the lengthy explanation given on this subject by Rabbi Avraham ibn Ezra*. Moreover, Rabbi Chaim Vital* specified, at the beginning of the Pri Etz Chaim*, Gate 1, in the name of his master, the Arizal*, that one must permit only songs and hymns "based on truth. In contrast, the later authorities, who have no knowledge of the Kabbalah*, do not know what they are saying and they err in their words spoken without knowledge."
Due to the value and importance of this achievement, I have formulated several notes, which you will find below. I hope that many people will introduce your Siddur* into their homes, consult it, and arrive at the desired goal — that is, to reflect upon the greatness of Hashem* and the smallness of man before prayer, as it is said: "When you pray, know before Whom you stand." And the Halachah* rules that one must meditate before prayer, at least three times a day during the week and four on Shabbos* and festivals. In this way, one will remove from one's heart all the pleasures of men, as the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, specifies at the beginning of chapter 98. This principle is based on the Mishnah*, according to which: "One begins to pray only..." (note 3: When one's head is heavy — that is, according to the commentary of Rashi, with humility). In this way, it is certain that the moment of prayer and the prayer itself will be in conformity with what they should be, and, according to the commentary of Rashi* previously cited, they will receive elevation.
With my respects and my blessing,
Notes:
At the beginning, page 14a, law 1, Tallis Katan*: "One says the blessing on the Tzitzis* before putting them on." Of course, regarding the Halachah* in general and that which is ruled by the Siddur* in particular, one must, in concrete practice, adopt the final conclusion.
Now, in our era, it is particularly rare to rule the law in this manner. Indeed, the Tallis Katan* must have the required size, failing which, in putting it on, one would recite an unnecessary blessing, with all the gravity that results, as the Siddur* says a little further on, in passing, and more precisely in the section reserved for those who deepen their analysis, page 24b. Due to our many sins, numerous are those who wear a Tallis Katan* that does not have the required dimensions, and in any event, it has already been said that in reciting the blessing of the large Tallis*, one must intend that it also apply to the small one. This is indeed what is done, even if one wears a Tallis Katan* having the required measure.
Consequently, those who have a Tallis Katan* that does not have the required measure and, all the more so, those who do not wear one at all, will listen to the blessing recited by one who puts on a large Tallis*. The later Poskim* explain all of this in the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapters 8, 16, and 17. This point will not be developed here.
End of the introduction, page 41b: One must speak here of "four Tefachim*," whereas the commentary says "a little more than four Tefachim*." This is what the Siddur* of the Arizal* edited by Rav Sh. of Rashkov specifies. You will also see the Pri Etz Chaim*, Gate of the Festival of Sukkos*, chapter 3, and the Gate of the Kavanos*, concerning Sukkos*, fourth section, regarding a strip four Tefachim* wide.
On this subject, you cite in the commentary what is said in the Siddur* of the Arizal*: "The leavened matter raised to the size of an olive." You will consult, on this subject, the Shaar HaKollel* on the Siddur*, by my grandfather, Rav A. D. Lavut*, Gate 48, chapter 2. He also cites the responsa Heshiv Moshe*. And you will also see the responsum of the Chasam Sofer* in the Orach Chaim* section, chapter 16.
Beginning of the Siddur*, page 1: It is said: "You have restored my soul to me," in accordance with the text of the blessing: "He restores the souls." One can justify this blessing, in the plain sense, by the necessity of recalling the original creation: "He breathed into his nostrils a soul of life."
You ask me about the formulation of the verse: "In Your hand I deposit my spirit." You will consult, on this subject, the Gate of the Kavanos*, commentaries on the night, chapter 10, which explains why it speaks here of spirit and not of soul.
End of the Siddur*, page 448, Rosh Chodesh*: The exceptions regarding fasts are cited (note 4: Rosh Chodesh Nissan and Rosh Chodesh Menachem Av). One must add to these the 1st of Tishrei*, Rosh Hashanah*. You will consult the Tzafnas Pane'ach* of the Rogatchover Gaon*, second edition, page 142b.
Same reference: The prohibition of working during Rosh Chodesh* is cited in the testament of Rabbi Yehuda HaChassid*, who asks that one not cut one's hair and nails on this day. One must determine whether this is a formal prohibition or a practice that is avoided due to danger, in which case there would be no intrinsic prohibition of working. The commentary of the Damesek Eliezer* poses this question. Likewise, according to one opinion, one may not cut one's hair in the second half of the day, according to the Siddur* of the Arizal*, his Shulchan Aruch*, and the Pri Etz Chaim*.
