Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6038 — Prayer
Volume 16 · Letter 266
By the grace of Hashem*,
7 Shevat* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I am responding to your letter from this Friday, eve of Shabbos*, with the request for a blessing that was enclosed, which will be read, at a propitious moment, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. You ask me how to guard against bad thoughts.
It has already been stated, at the very beginning of the four sections of the Shulchan Aruch*, that the verse: "I have placed Hashem* before me always" expresses a great principle of the Torah*, enabling one to be immediately filled with the fear of Hashem*. You will consult the Tur*, at this reference, the Shulchan Aruch*, at the beginning of chapter 1, the Rama*, and the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*.
To strengthen this meditation, it would be good to learn, until knowing it by heart, the beginning of chapter 41 of the holy Tanya*, through page 56b, at the words: "before the King." In all domains, the help of Hashem* is necessary and, to obtain it, it would be advisable, every weekday, before the morning prayer, to set aside a few coins for tzedakah*. In addition, you will adopt the three well-known studies of the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*.
With my blessing,
ו'לח
