To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav David* (note 1: Rav D. Winchester, of Chicago. See, on his subject, Letters no. 4296 and 4364),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter, in which you discuss the proposal to stun an animal immediately after the Shechitah*, in order to hasten its death and allow the workers to immediately begin their work (note 2: Of flaying and cutting).

Regarding such proposals, whether before or after the Shechitah*, one can concretely verify that, if one accepts one, it becomes a general principle, and one permission introduces another. Moreover, this proposal itself raises several risks, which will not be developed here. In this case, its benefit is very limited, for it amounts to only a few minutes of difference (note 3: Depending on whether the animal is stunned or not). This practice is therefore not justified, even for those who seek leniency. This is self-evident.

Although you do not speak of it, I hope that you participated in the Chassidishe farbrengen* of the luminous day of 19 Kislev*. May Hashem* grant that this motivation continue to manifest itself throughout the entire year.

במענה למכתבו, בו כותב בענין ההצעה להכות על ראש הבהמה תיכף אחר השחיטה למהר מיתת הבהמה, כדי ליתן אפשריות להפועלים להתחיל בטפולה.

והנה רואים במוחש בכל ההצעות כמו אלו, הן לפני השחיטה ואפילו לאחר השחיטה, באם מסכימים לאחת מהן, בונים בנין אב והולכים "מהיתר להיתר" נוסף על החששות שיש בענין זה מצד עצמו ואכמ"ל, וכיון שהתועלת בדבר קלה היא, כי החילוק הוא רק באיזה רגעים, הרי אין היזק שוה אפילו לדעת אלו שירצו "להתיר", וק"ל.

תקותי אף שאינו מזכיר עד"ז שהשתתף בהתועדות יום הבהיר י"ט כסלו, ויה"ר שההתעוררות תהי' רישומה ניכר בכל השנה כולה.
