To my close relative, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav Shneur Zalman* (note 1: Rav S. Z. Schmerling, of Tel Aviv. See, on his subject, Letter no. 4301),

After a long silence, I have received your letter from this Friday, eve of Shabbos*. You tell me that I have not yet acknowledged receipt of the manuscript you sent me (note 2: See, on this subject, Letter no. 4301) through my close relative, the Chassid*, Rav DovBer Ludmir. I am surprised by this, for I did so a very long time ago. Of course, if a text from a manuscript you have sent me is published, the reference will be indicated, as well as the name of the owner of this manuscript — that is, that of your father, may he rest in peace. As is the Jewish custom, it will also be noted that you yourself made this delivery.

You state, in your letter, that you descend from the first Aliyah* of Chabad Chassidim* (note 3: See the Sefer Toldos Chabad B'Eretz HaKodesh, page 35, and regarding the Aliyah and mission of Rav Shimon Schmerling, page 73), sent by the Alter Rebbe*. I would like to know whether this is an imprecision and whether you were, in fact, alluding to the Mitteler Rebbe*. Indeed, it seems to me that the first Aliyah* of Chabad Chassidim* took place in his era and not in that of the Alter Rebbe*. In 5537 (note 4: 1777), there was an Aliyah* of all the Chassidim* in general (note 5: And not specifically of Chabad), immediately after the passing of the Tzaddik*, the Angel (note 6: Rabbi Avraham the Angel, son of the Maggid of Mezeritch*). At that time, Chabad Chassidus* was not yet known as an independent entity. It became so several years later, when the Alter Rebbe* assumed the leadership of the Chassidim*.

At a propitious moment, I will mention your name and that of the members of your family at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, so that each one obtains the fulfillment of his needs.

לאחרי השתיקה הארוכה מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מיום ועש"ק, ולפלא שכותב שעד עתה לא קבל אישור קבלת הביכל ששלח ע"י מחו' הוו"ח מוה' דובער שי' לאדמיר, שהרי אשרוהו מכבר ומכבר, ומובן שכשידפיסו מה מהביכלעך ששלח, יציינו את הביכעל ובצירוף שם הבעל של הביכעל, ז.א. אביו ע"ה ואשר נתקבל ע"י כ' שליט"א והרי נוהג ישראל הוא.

ובזה להעיר שמזכיר במכתב, שהי' מעלי' הראשונה של חסידי חב"ד ששלח אותם אדמו"ר הזקן, ואתענין לדעת אם פליטת הקולמוס הוא וצ"ל אדמו"ר האמצעי, כי כמדומה עלי' הראשונה של חסידי חב"ד היתה בזמנו ולא בזמן אדמו"ר זקן (כי עליית החסידים שבשנת תקל"ז היתה עליית חסידים בכלל תיכף לאחרי הסתלקות הרה"צ המלאך שעדיין לא נתפרסמה חסידות חב"ד כחטיבה בפ"ע, עד שאדמו"ר הזקן קבל נשיאות בפרסום איזה שנים אחרי זה).

בעת רצון יזכירו אותו וב"ב שיחיו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע כאו"א להמצטרך להם.
