Volume 16 · Letter 261

By the grace of Hashem*,

3 Shevat* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*:

A) How to achieve success in studies and merit significant help from Hashem*?

Our Sages* say that: "if someone tells you that he made efforts but that these were not crowned with success, do not believe him." It follows that, if you make a genuine effort to understand our holy Torah*, it is a certainty that you will achieve success. Everything depends solely on your strong determination in this matter. To broaden the help of Hashem*, and therefore your success, which will diminish the difficulties, you will set aside tzedakah* every weekday before the morning prayer. In addition, you will read every day as well, including on Shabbos* and festivals, after the morning prayer, Tehillim*, according to their monthly division. It would be good for you to also adopt the well-known studies of the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*. We have heard many times from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, that these concern every person and that they exercise a positive effect in various domains.

B) It is said: "Serve Hashem* in joy." What should one do, then, if one is somewhat sad?

You will consult the Rambam*, at the end of the Laws of Lulav*. This text explains that every person, in every situation, can be joyful in serving the Creator. Not only is this possible, but moreover, it constitutes an important, indispensable, and essential phase of the service of Hashem*. How to rid oneself of sadness and exclude it? Various texts of the Tanya* explain this, as its index demonstrates. May Hashem* grant that you convey good news of all this to me. You will tell me that you are intensifying your study of the holy Torah* and of its luminary — that is, its deeper dimension, which in our era has been revealed by Chassidus*.

With my blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,

the secretary,
