Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6027 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 16 · Letter 255 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem*,
1 Shevat* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yehuda Zerachya Mordechai Leib* (note 1: Rav Y. Z. M. L. Segal, of Tel Aviv. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5742),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
After a particularly long interruption, I have received your letter of 22 Teves* and your request for a blessing, which will be read, at a propitious moment, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. May Hashem* grant that you announce good news of its content to me.
I read with pleasure, at the end of your correspondence, what you say about the new students who have come to study the Torah*. It is certain that you will not content yourself with this, that you will arouse your thirst and your desire in this domain. Our Sages* say that one who possesses a hundred coins feels a lack and desires two hundred; then, when he has two hundred, he experiences an even greater lack and wishes for four hundred. This is self-evident. Now, if this sacred mission is incumbent upon everyone, how much more so is this the case for the young, who have just embarked upon the battle of life, especially those who have the possibility of exercising an influence upon their surroundings. Now, if the overseer of the cistern is appointed by Hashem*, how much more so is this the case for a Rav* who delivers his teaching to a holy community.
Of course, to convince one's fellow, one must be moist to the point of moistening others. In our era, the entire world is once again in turmoil and the means of putting all of this into practice are therefore likewise intermingled. All of this is explained in a letter of the Rebbe Rashab*, printed in the Kuntres U'Ma'ayan*, page 22, on the subject of organizing one's conduct. You will consult this text.
You ask me about the connection between the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* and that of Chabad*. You will consult, on this subject, the lengthy explanation contained in a letter of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, printed in the HaTamim*, volume 2. And you know the response of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, addressed to Rabbi Baruch of Mezhibuzh*, the grandson of the Baal Shem Tov*, emphasizing that he was the son of his daughter (note 2: This matrilineal descent entailing, according to our Sages, a greater closeness than that of a son of a son).
With my blessing to convey good news,
