Volume 16 · Letter 248

By the grace of Hashem*,

28 Teves* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter of 24 Teves*, date of the Hilloula* of the Alter Rebbe*, who is the author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*. You describe therein your situation, particularly regarding your engagement. You tell me that, on your part, you have done everything. You were not even deterred by secondary reasons. Now, our Sages* say that it is useless to lament over the past. It matters little, therefore, what happened. In the future, you will seek a woman who fears Hashem*. You will do so like someone searching for what he has lost, of course in accordance with the ways of the Torah*. In this way, you will know success.

You tell me that you rejected a certain proposal because they wished to make you leave your position as a teacher. It is clear that this should not be an obstacle. If, on the other points, this proposal is suitable, it is not obligatory that you be a teacher. You will be able to be useful in this domain by being an unpaid instructor (note 1: And, for this purpose, having a paid professional activity elsewhere) and, of course, by supporting Torah* study (note 2: Financially, by means of these earnings). Indeed, the verse mentions Zevulun* before Yissachar* (note 3: The former, through the proceeds of his commercial activity, financing the Torah study of the latter).

You wonder about the question raised by the words of our Sages*: is an engagement subject to man's choice, or is it a heavenly decree that cannot be altered? In general, there is no decree that cannot be altered, as Tractate Rosh Hashanah* 16a and various other texts indicate. In this regard, several sources pose this question, in particular the Talmud* and the Zohar*. It is explained, on this matter, in Tractate Moed Katan* 18b, that it is always effective to invoke divine mercy (note 4: See, on this subject, Letter no. 264). In such a case, the decree may be realized in another life, according to the Zohar*, vol. 1, page 91b, the Tikkunei Zohar*, Tikkun* 14, and the Sefer Chassidim*, chapter 83. This point will not be developed here.

No doubt you are redoubling your ardor in your sacred mission, consisting of drawing the hearts of the Children of Israel close to our Father Who is in heaven. This is a great merit, multiplying the blessings of Hashem*, in general and for the great mitzvah*, the first mitzvah* stated in the Torah* (note 5: That of marrying and having children), in particular.

With my blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,

the secretary,
