Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6017 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 16 · Letter 245

By the grace of Hashem*,

28 Teves* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Shalom* (note 1: Rav S. Rivkin, of St. Louis. See, on his subject, Letter no. 3491),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter of 22 Teves*. At a propitious moment, I will mention all those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, in accordance with what you write. You intercede on their behalf and our Sages* have taught us that "one who prays for his fellow is answered first." This includes, above all, your wish to educate, together with your wife and your daughter, Ben Tzion*, may Hashem* grant him long life, your child who has just been circumcised, to the Torah*, the marriage canopy, and good deeds.

You allude to the young man who wishes to convert to Judaism. According to the revealed dimension of the Torah* and, even more so, according to its deeper dimension, it would be good to put him in contact with Rabbanim* who fear the Word of Hashem*, since you yourself have not dealt with this until now. They will study his situation and put into practice the teaching of our Torah*.

Concerning the other young man, what I told you about unsupervised milk was based on a well-known story of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, which, it seems to me, has already been printed (note 2: See the Sefer HaMaamarim Yiddish*, page 57). This shows that unsupervised milk arouses doubts regarding faith. This is what I told you. For if, at all times, it has obviously been necessary to scrupulously observe these practices, how much more so is this the case for the young people of the United States, particularly those who pursue their studies in institutions where good and evil are intermixed, as it is said: "One nation shall struggle against the other." You must understand this.

You also refer to his state of health. He clearly indicated to me, it seems, that he resides in that city and returns home only rarely. In any event, I cannot modify what he himself said explicitly. Of course, no one can take the responsibility of concealing such a situation, from which doubts in faith may arise. You establish a connection with the fact that he does not use his parents' dishes. I do not understand this. There is separate crockery for dairy products. It is therefore not a matter of all the dishes or all the foods.

This young man asks you whether he should go pursue his studies in another Yeshivah*. The one you cite has acquired a reputation for fear of Hashem*. The kashrus* is satisfactory there and it is therefore surely the same for supervised milk. He says that his father will have difficulty paying (note 3: The tuition fees). One can surely intervene in this domain. There are surely, in your city, persons who know the directors of that Yeshivah*.

I will mention your name at the holy resting place (note 4: Of the Frierdiker Rebbe*), so that your effort for the mechitzah* (note 5: The separation between men and women in the synagogue) may be fruitful. In accordance with the opening of the four sections of the Shulchan Aruch*, which is therefore its primary element, may Hashem* grant that you not be affected by the scoffers, and moreover that you be "moist to the point of moistening others." In this way, you will exercise your influence whenever you can and you will convince others, in turn, not to fear those who mock. In this way, your intervention will be fruitful.

With my blessing to convey good news,

M. Schneerson,

You refer to what happened to the Sefer Torah* (note 6: Which fell during its use). Now, there is testimony on this matter that is reliable according to the Torah* (note 7: According to which the Sefer Torah did not touch the ground). One must therefore accept that nothing happened. Nevertheless, precisely in order to thank Hashem* that nothing happened, it would be good to set aside fifty-four dollars for a cause of tzedakah* connected to education based on sacred values.
