Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6016 — Health

Volume 16 · Letter 244 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem*,

28 Teves* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Ephraim Eliezer HaCohen* (note 1: Rav E. E. Yalles, of Philadelphia. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5792),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letters, that of the eve of 24 Teves*, Hilloula* of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, with what it contained, and that of the day following this date. I thank you for the good news you communicate to me concerning the state of health of that person. May Hashem* grant that you also convey good news, of a visible and tangible good, in the other domains you mention.

Referring to the tenth month, that of Teves*, our Sages* say, in the Terumas HaShanah*, that "the body takes pleasure in physical contact" (note 2: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5041. This statement was made in connection with the meeting of Esther and Achashverosh*). It must be explained according to the Midrash*, cited by the Meorei Or* (note 3: The Rebbe notes in the margin: "It seems to me that this also appears in the Mechir Yayin* of the Rama*, but I do not have this work at hand"), which specifies: "Achashverosh* alludes to the Holy One, blessed be He, Who possesses the end and the beginning." Thus, "the body" — the Essence of Hashem* — "takes pleasure in physical contact" with the Jews.

You will consult the holy Tanya*, chapter 49, adding that the expression: "You have chosen us from among the peoples and the languages" alludes to the body in all its coarseness. Now, choice is true only when it is subject to no limitation, no inducement (note 4: The Rebbe notes in the margin: "You will consult Iggeres HaKodesh*, chapter 20, page 130a, a letter that the Alter Rebbe wrote a few days before his passing, in the village of Piena, and the Derech Mitzvosecha*, page 170a"). Consequently, the election of Israel is itself true, as it is said: "Man shall be like us." You will consult the Rambam*, Laws of Teshuvah*, chapter 5, and the Likkutei Torah*, of the one whose Hilloula* we celebrate, Parshas* Emor*, page 38b.

It is precisely the contact of the physical body that gives pleasure, as the Tanya* explains in chapter 36. For it is through what concerns the body that one fulfills the Divine will (note 5: To reside here below, within matter). And as a prelude to all of this, it is necessary that this body be in good health and whole, as the Rambam* explains in his Laws of Opinions, at the beginning of chapter 3 and in chapter 4.

With my respects and my blessing to convey good news of all this, and on the occasion of your birthday, for a year of success materially and spiritually,

Regarding your astonishment about natural love during Shabbos* (note 6: Rav Yalles wrote: "I remember that at the conclusion of Shabbos Parshas Emor, as I entered the holy office of the Rebbe, he was drinking tea, which was surely the fourth Shabbos meal. I then recounted, with the emotion that characterized me in my youth, the manner in which we spent the Shabbos meal together, what we spoke about. Then I said: 'I felt a natural love.' And our holy master responded, with astonishment: 'A natural love, during Shabbos? It was a hidden love!'"), one can clarify that this day introduces pleasure into each of its aspects, including during sleep, like oil that permeates everything. Such a situation runs counter to nature, which is always enduring, for "a permanent pleasure is not a pleasure." You will consult chapter 44 of the Tanya*, which says: "like a nature... despite this, it is not..." You will also see the letter of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, in the supplements of the Kuntres HaAvodah*.
