Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6014 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 16 · Letter 242 · [25 Tévet 5718]
(25 Teves* 5718)
I am responding to your letter of 20 Teves* and I am very surprised to observe that my reply seems to have discouraged you. Now, you surely know the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* concerning the love of one's fellow, in accordance with a saying of the Alter Rebbe* (note 1: See, on this subject, Letter no. 6004), according to which "You shall love your fellow as yourself" is the vessel for "You shall love Hashem* your Elokim*." And you likewise know the answer he gave to the question posed to him about the priority to be accorded to the one or the other.
Now, there is no greater way to act for the love of one's fellow than through education based on sacred values. Furthermore, children maintain a particular relationship with those who, for whatever reason, have been in the army, as can be concretely verified. I have good hope that you will become aware of the fact that this discouragement is suggested to you by "the little cunning one" (note 2: The evil inclination) and not by the situation itself, Heaven forbid. One must therefore fight against it with all one's strength, for he is "the fool" whose sole purpose is "to deceive," according to the words of a well-known Chassidic song.
You are considering a visit here. This is, of course, not excluded, Heaven forbid, but it would be good, for this purpose, to come bearing goods and even great goods — that is, after having conducted an effort for a certain period of time in the domain of education, in application of what has just been said. Moreover, in such a case, your journey and your visit here will not be for you alone, for the children will follow you — certainly not physically, but at least in spirit. Then, upon your return, you will also influence their bodies. This will not be the case if you have not yet established any contact with your future students.
It would have been desirable for all those who have come here in the past, or those who wish to come, to become aware of the truth, of the immense difference between these two ways of traveling. Of course, you may disseminate all of this, including in my name. Although it is sometimes necessary to explain and clarify the simplest ideas, one can never be certain of the manner in which they will be understood and the conclusion that will be drawn from them.
