Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6013 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 16 · Letter 241
By the grace of Hashem*,
25 Teves* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I am responding to your letter of 21 Teves*, in which you describe your difficulties in earning a livelihood. As a result, you are unfortunately compelled, according to you, to work during Shabbos* and the festivals. Despite this, you and your family lack the basic minimum.
You surely understand that Hashem*, blessed be He, is the Creator of the world, Who directs it. You also agree that He gives the Torah*. It is therefore absolutely inconceivable that the Creator of the world would cause anyone to be compelled to transgress His commandments. One can, moreover, cite an additional proof. You yourself observe that you lack the minimum. Now, man is created in perfection and he must attain good through his free will. He is therefore under no compulsion and, in the end, he will be able to verify that what happens to him is for his true good, not only spiritual but also material. Indeed, it is desired to give him an ample reward. Now, "the reward is commensurate with the effort." At times, he is therefore subjected to a trial, as it is said: "For Hashem* your Elokim* is testing you..." If he overcomes this trial, he is rewarded not only in the World to Come, but also in this world. Thenceforth, he becomes aware that there was nothing but a trial, intended to multiply the reward, to better ensure his sustenance, his physical health, and above all the true satisfaction one derives from one's children.
I hope that these few lines will suffice for you to immediately adopt conduct in conformity with the commandments of our Torah*, Torah of life. Even if, at first, the difficulties do not disappear, I am certain that within a relatively short time, you will verify that you have made the right choice, that you thus multiply, in all your needs and those of your family, the blessings of Hashem*, Creator of the world, Who gives the Torah*.
In anticipation of good news of all this,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
the secretary,
