Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6012 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 16 · Letter 240 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem*,

25 Teves* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, devotes himself to communal needs, of manifold knowledge, Rav Shlomo Yosef* (note 1: Rav Shlomo Yosef Zevin, of Jerusalem, author of the Talmudic Encyclopedia. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5360),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I enclose a copy of the letter I am sending to our friend, Mr. Shazar*, may he have long life (note 2: See the preceding letter). If you have the opportunity, you will use the influence you exercise upon him to hasten, with words emanating from the heart, the full realization of these projects, in the best possible manner. May Hashem* grant success to all those who invest their efforts in this matter, as in everything concerning the dissemination of the wellsprings (note 3: Of Chassidus) outward.

The copy of my letter, which I enclose, will enable you to understand why I have been slow to acknowledge receipt of your correspondence and to respond to you. Indeed, devoting myself to the editing of these manuscripts, I had to overturn the established order, according to the expression of Tractate Pesachim* 113a. For all the time that could be mobilized for this project was dedicated to it. Furthermore, even the time that corresponded to another occupation, which could not be altered, was devoted to it as well. My thought was thus concentrated on these manuscripts. After all these upheavals, there was here not only an occupation of mitzvah*, but also a pleasant activity, for a pleasant mitzvah*. May Hashem* grant that the difficulties that appeared after publication also be resolved, as quickly and easily as possible, at least relatively speaking. You know the details of this matter through the letter of the Rav*, Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Chaim Mordechai Aizik Hadakov*.

Last point, which is of the greatest interest: I have just received the eighth volume of the Talmudic Encyclopedia, which is comparable to the preceding ones, filled with luminous explanations and notes, including in domains that one has studied for some time. Despite this, there is not a single article in which one does not find a new idea. Evidently, it is impossible that there be no omissions in so gigantic a work. No doubt you receive letters on this subject and you collect them. Little by little, these gaps may be filled, for example in the form of a supplement.

In this regard, during the Chassidishe farbrengen* of this 19 Kislev* (note 4: See the Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 11, from page 80), the topic discussed — in connection with the conclusion of the Tanya* — was speech, and the fact that sometimes it refers to the physical heavens and earth. Now, a distinction is indeed introduced, since reference is first made to action, then to the ten Utterances. I cited the principle, cited by Chassidus*, according to which speech is considered as an action (note 5: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5897). I am surprised that you did not mention, in the corresponding article, the distinction introduced by the commentary of the Rashba* on Tractate Shevuos*, in the name of the Ri MiGash*. You will consult the Likkutei Torah* on three Parshiyos*, Parshas* Noach*, at the end of the Chassidic discourse entitled: "Mayim Rabim*" ("The Many Waters"), page 54d.

May Hashem* grant that you know success in your sacred mission, in good health, with breadth of spirit, for long days and good years, with eagerness, and that furthermore — or in other words — you know success in time. You have surely heard the account of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, on this subject. Now, this depends in part on you, if you free yourself from everything that is not indispensable. Indeed, such an activity presents two aspects: the study of the Torah*, on the one hand, and the mitzvah* that cannot be accomplished by anyone else, on the other, as Tractate Moed Katan* 9b explains.

With my blessing to convey good news of all this and to know success,

P.S.: You ask me where, in your book, the Tzaddik*, Rabbi Shlomo of Karlin* (note 6: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5772), is mentioned. He is cited in the Sipurei Chassidim* on the festivals, chapter 246. Indeed, he was omitted from the index of proper names.
