Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6010 — Tzedakah

To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, of manifold accomplishments, Rav Moshe* (note 1: Rav M. Porouch, of Jerusalem. See, on his subject, Letter no. 4758),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter of 29 Kislev*. I read therein, with pleasure, that you have conveyed to several of your students how dreadful it is to publicly and massively desecrate Shabbos*, by using, to travel from the Holy Land to the United States, the boats that continue their route during the holy day (note 2: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5898). As you know, their crew, providing all services, is composed of Jews.

May Hashem* grant that all of this finally be rectified. There is a disgrace in this, even in relation to the nations of the world, apart from the intrinsic gravity of the situation. How detestable is this situation! For there is here a terrible desecration of Shabbos*! Several persons who fear the Word of Hashem* and wish to ascend to Eretz Yisrael*, because it is the Holy Land, the Palace of the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, schedule their voyage precisely during the awesome days and in the perspective of the holy day (note 3: In preparation for Yom Kippur). They put into practice the teaching of our Sages* concerning: "you shall buy from or sell to your fellow," yet they pay no attention to the fact that, as our Sages* also say: "Jerusalem was destroyed solely because Shabbos* was desecrated there." They thus go to spend the holy days in the Holy Land while desecrating Shabbos*, which is considered equivalent to all the mitzvos*. And no one says a word!

Furthermore, in reaction to what I said to those who consulted me on this matter, people immediately tried to exert pressure upon me. Needless to say, they are unable, in this regard, to cite references from the Talmud* and the Poskim*. You surely understand what I mean.

One must derive a general principle from the experience gained from the paper factory in Haifa (note 4: Which they wished, presumably, to see operating on Shabbos under the pretext of some national priority). A firm position was then adopted and, according to reports, the situation was ultimately rectified. All of this will strengthen hope, will show that there is no reason to despair, that one will be able to set things right for these boats as well, on condition that the opinion of the Torah* on this matter be unanimously expressed by all.

במענה למכתבו מכ"ט כסלו, נעם לי לקרות בו אשר עורר כמה וכמה ממושפעיו בהנוגע לענין המבהיל דחילול שבת בפרהסיא ובסיטוניות על ידי נסיעה באניות (בין אה"ק ת"ו וארה"ב הנוסעות) בשבת קדש, שכידוע הצוות (וכל השירותים נעשים על ידי) בני ישראל. ויהי רצון אשר סוף סוף יתוקן הדבר מעיקרו, והרי כדי בזיון גם כלפי אומות העולם, נוסף על עצם הענין. וכמה מגוחך הדבר, לולא ענין המבהיל דחילול שבת בפרהסיא, אשר כמה מהחרדים לדבר ה' הרוצים לעלות לא"י מפני שהיא ארץ הקדושה ופלטרין של מלך מה"מ הקב"ה, וקובעים נסיעה זו לימים הנוראים וליום הקדוש וכיו"ב, ומהדרין שיהי' דווקא כדרשת רז"ל קנה או מכור מיד עמיתך - ואף על פי כן אין שמים לב להודעת רז"ל לא חרבה ירושלים אלא בשביל שחיללו בה את השבת, ונוסעים לימים הקדושים להיות בארץ הקדושה על ידי חילול שבת ששקולה כנגד כל המצוות, ואין פוצה פה ומצפצף. ולא עוד אלא שכתגובה על מה שאמרתי לאלה ששאלוני דעתי בזה, הנה תיכף ומיד התחילו להפעיל לחץ עלי (כמובן לא ע"י ראי' מש"ס ופוסקים) וד"ל.

והרי יש ללמוד בנין אב מהנסיון בהנוגע לביה"ח לנייר בחיפה, שכשלקחו עמדה תקיפה הרי כפי הנשמע סוף סוף נתקן הדבר, שזה בטח יוסיף אומץ בהתקוה שאין להתייאש גם מתיקון ענין הספינות, ובלבד שיוודע גלוי פה אחד דעת תורה בזה...
