Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6009 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 16 · Letter 237

By the grace of Hashem*,

24 Teves* 5718,

Hilloula* of the Alter Rebbe*,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the attention of Mr. Eliezer Steinman (note 1: See, on his subject, Letters no. 5331 and 6124),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I wish, by the present letter, to thank you for your attention and for the books you have sent to my library. I have good hope that you will continue to do so in the future, for every study necessarily introduces a new idea. May Hashem* grant that you experience advancement, from one stage to the next, in your endeavors, particularly in the dissemination of the concepts of Chassidus*, in accordance with the request addressed to each one of us, in an ever-increasing manner. Furthermore, you have been granted the possibility of conveying them and inculcating them in various circles, upon which you personally exercise an influence.

As several texts explain and as Chassidus* emphasizes, from every idea a final synthesis must be derived, and this further establishes that, even though it is said that "Hashem* demands the heart," concrete action is nonetheless indispensable. Furthermore, it constitutes the proof of the preparation and integrity of the heart. Indeed, commenting on the saying: "No one is as wise as one who has experience," my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, emphasizes that experience and concrete action constitute the proof of wisdom, as several Chassidic texts specify. For the time being, I have also found this explanation in the Akeidah*, at gate 14, and in the Ma'avar Yabok*, at gate 2.

For now, the purpose of the present letter is the following. By separate shipment, you have been sent Chassidic books that we have recently published, in particular two collections of Chassidic discourses of the Alter Rebbe*, appearing for the first time, from manuscript (note 2: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5970). These works contain many discourses from the early period or, according to the common expression, "from before Petersburg" (note 3: Before the imprisonment that culminated in the liberation of 19 Kislev). In general, these texts were then much more concise and, as the Rebbe Rashab* says in his talk of 19 Kislev* 5663 (note 4: 1903), published in the Toras Shalom* (note 5: At page 26. See, on this subject, Letter no. 6011): "The discourses from before Petersburg burned the world and provoked a shock emanating from heaven."

With my esteem, my respects, and my blessing,

ו'ט
