I am responding to your letter of 23 Kislev*, which has just reached me, in which you ask me about the continuation of your studies. Now, you are in the Yeshivah* and it is therefore clear that you must conform to its organization and its regulations. Accordingly, you will pose this question to the directors of the Yeshivah* you attend and they will guide you.

You speak to me of forging a personal opinion. But you do not elaborate, you do not specify what you mean. You are no doubt alluding to the means of dispelling the despair that seizes you at times, as you write. You will therefore consult the passages of the holy Tanya* that emphasize that a person must not become discouraged and that formally condemn sadness. You will find these passages in the index printed at the end of the book, in the Kehot* edition, which you will surely find in the Yeshivah* library or which you yourself possess.

More profoundly, the rejection of discouragement is based on a principle of our Torah*, the affirmed faith that Hashem* accords His Providence* to each individual. He is the Essence of good and it is certain that everything He does is for the good.

I hope that you also have a fixed time for the study of Chassidus* and that, moreover, you are aware of the three studies of the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*, which are well known. At the very least, you will adopt them in the future.

במענה למכתבו מכ"ג כסלו שזה עתה הגיע, בו שואל בהנוגע להמשיך לימודו מאז.

והנה מובן אשר כיון שנמצא הוא בישיבה צריך להתאים כהאמור לסדרי הישיבה והנהגתה, ולכן יפנה בזה להנהלת הישיבה בה לומד, והם יורוהו.

במה שכותב אודות קניית דעת עצמית, אינו מפרט ומפרש כוונתו בזה, וכנראה שהוא בשלילת מדת היאוש שקורה לו כפי שכותב, ויעיין בספר התניא קדישא במקומות שמבאר שם, איך שאל יפול לב אדם עליו, ושולל בכל תוקף את העצבות וכו' וימצא מקומות אלו במפתח הענינים הנדפס לבסוף התניא הוצאת קה"ת, אשר בטח נמצא הוא בספרי' של הישיבה או אצלו,

ובפנימיות הענינים הרי שלילת היאוש מיוסדת היא על עיקר בתורתנו, והיא האמונה מוחלטה אשר השי"ת משגיח על כאו"א בהשגחה פרטית, וכיון שהוא עצם הטוב, בודאי דכל מה דעביד רחמנא לטב עביד.

תקותי שיש לו קביעות עתים גם בלימוד תורת החסידות ויודע גם כן על דבר שלשת השיעורים בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים וישמור עליהם עכ"פ מכאן ולהבא.
