Volume 16 · Letter 233

By the grace of Hashem*,

22 Teves* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter of 16 Teves*, in which you present the two paths open to you in the near future. You ask me what I think of them. Very often, in such cases, the final decision requires that certain points first be settled, for these are more important than the question you pose, which is itself merely a consequence.

In my opinion, this is indeed the case here. You must organize your life so that:

A) You can marry and build a Jewish home very quickly.

B) You set aside a fixed time for the study of our holy Torah*. Until now, you have combined sacred and secular studies. It would therefore be good to dedicate at least one year exclusively to sacred studies.

It is therefore in light of these two points that you will make the final decision to which you allude. And you can deduce from this what my opinion is on this question. You tell me that your studies will not permit you to marry for the next four years. This is ruled out. If you can specialize in your field in one or two years and no more, and if, furthermore, it is possible for you to marry during this period, this proposal is positive.

Should you be in a religious kibbutz or reside in a city? This is less important than what has just been said. Your place of residence during the coming year or two is by no means determinative for what will be your permanent home. The same is true for where you will be during the vacations. A temporary place of residence must have no bearing on where you will settle in life.

Moreover, it seems that you exert an influence on a certain circle, and there is surely a way to take advantage of this to strengthen Yiddishkeit* — especially in the essential domain, concrete action, which is fundamental: daily life based on our Torah*, Torah of life. You must therefore strive to take advantage of this possibility. Of course, this will be easier in a kibbutz than in a large city.

Everything is an effect of Providence, emanating from Hashem*, Who is unlimited. One must make full use of everything, and I therefore seize this occasion, not only to communicate my opinion on the question you pose, but also to underscore the necessity of studying the deep dimension of the Torah*, which in our era has been revealed by Chassidus*. And this is not merely a matter of additional knowledge of the Torah* that one should acquire. A person's life depends on it, including in daily life. Indeed, a Chassidic way of life differs from one that sets aside the luminary of Chassidus* on a fundamental point — but, of course, a letter is not the appropriate framework for lengthy explanations. Indeed, according to a well-known saying, "what is clearly established needs no proof."

Of course, my words are not intended to show disrespect toward anyone, Heaven forbid, still less toward the way of life of those who fear Hashem* and observe His mitzvos*. I merely intend to underscore that true good has several levels, one higher than the other. Furthermore, in this troubled era, the need for Chassidic warmth, light, and vitality is particularly felt.

With my blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,

the secretary,
