Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6004 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 16 · Letter 232 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu et

By the grace of Hashem*,

22 Teves* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and assumes a heavenly mission, Rav Tzvi Dov* (note 1: Rav T. D. Travis, of Linen, Massachusetts),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

After a particularly long interruption, I have received your letter from this Thursday, in which you describe your life at present. You ask me whether, in my opinion, you should continue in this direction or strive to reside in a large city, where those who fear Hashem* are numerous.

I have received, on various occasions, instructions in similar cases from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. Divine Providence* has given you the merit of making your voice heard and of exercising a definite influence in the place where you currently find yourself, where those who observe the Torah* and the mitzvos* are indeed not numerous. Not only must you not leave this place, but, quite the contrary, you must establish yourself there even more firmly, seeking means, strategies, and ways to make full use of this influence.

According to what your letter indicates and the life you lead, you make only very little use of this influence, and this is in no way sufficient. According to what you say, you devote your free time to your own study, for "great is study... (note 2: that leads to action)." However, in our era, in our generation, especially in the United States, the spread of Yiddishkeit* in the broadest proportions is truly a matter of survival — not only for the World to Come, but also for this world.

One can observe that this is indeed so in the lives of the young. A non-religious education, or one that is barely so, poses a danger to behavior, to the broadest extreme. This is self-evident. It is therefore a mitzvah* whose fulfillment cannot be entrusted to another person — a situation of danger. It is therefore quite clear that this objective surpasses the study of the Torah*, as our Sages* rule in various texts.

Moreover, you have been in this place for the past few years and you feel the awakening to teshuvah*, to faith, to religious life, including among those who until now were absolutely foreign to all of this. One must reflect upon the precept: "You shall love your fellow as yourself" — especially according to the well-known saying (note 3: See, on this subject, Letters no. 5597 and 6014) of our masters, in the name of the Alter Rebbe*, according to which this is one with the injunction: "You shall love Hashem*, your Elokim*" — the source of all the mitzvos*. And our Sages* say: "One who serves Hashem* out of love cannot be compared to one who does so out of fear." Whoever truly reflects upon all of this will have no doubt in this matter.

I have good hope that these few lines will suffice for someone like you — indeed, that you will find the proper words to explain and illuminate this idea to your wife. In this way, not only will she accept this position and devote herself to strengthening Yiddishkeit* in your city, with energy and ardor, but moreover she will lend her collaboration to your endeavors. The participation of both of you will be ever-increasing and will reveal ever more light, for our holy Torah* demands that one experience elevation in the domain of holiness.

Awaiting good news of all this,

P.S.: At the end of your letter, you ask me whether you should content yourself with serving Hashem* as you have done until now. According to what has been said, you have absolutely no right to do so. You must, on the contrary, greatly multiply your efforts to strengthen Yiddishkeit*. Nothing withstands the will, all the more so since, in our era, one can observe how fruitful such action is.
