Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6000 — Prayer
Volume 16 · Letter 228
By the grace of Hashem*,
21 Teves* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I have received your letter, which was undated, with what it contained. You say to me: "Master of the World, until when?" Now, as you know, our holy books say that it is not good to raise questions and interrogations against the Holy One, blessed be He. It is inappropriate to draw up the balance of each person's conduct toward Hashem*. It is preferable to solicit His blessing, His salvation, granted through His gratuitous kindness. In the words of the well-known prayer (note 1: Of the Selichos) familiar to all Jews: "To You, Hashem*, belongs the tzedakah*, and to us (note 2: faces covered in shame)... It is not through our goodness and our good deeds that we present ourselves before You. It is as paupers and destitute that we knock at Your doors." In this way, we have the assurance that: "Our King, You will not send us away empty-handed from before You." It is surely unnecessary to say more, for all of this is explained in various texts, all the more so since your letter seems to indicate that you do indeed possess some knowledge.
May Hashem* grant that you convey good news to me about all the persons about whom you write, of a visible and tangible good — which, of course, includes you yourself as well. You will therefore tell me that you are strengthening your study of the Torah*, your practice of mitzvos* in the finest manner, your advancement from one stage to the next. You will also confirm to me that the blessings of Hashem* are multiplying, from day to day (note 3: It is noted at the end of this letter: "Note added by the secretariat: In certain cases, the Rebbe, shlita, personally signs his letters. But regarding correspondence and responses, he not only reads the content but the entire text, and then rereads it again before its dispatch." See, on this subject, the end of Letter no. 5096).
With my blessing,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
the secretary,
