Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5996 — Tzedakah

By the grace of Hashem*,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letters of 4 and 14 Teves*, as well as those that preceded them. I read with pleasure, in your last correspondence, that you are very satisfied to be among the donors. May Hashem* grant that the promise of our Sages* be fulfilled in this regard, according to which one experiences elevation in the domain of holiness. Without doubt, Hashem* will keep His promise, in accordance with the affirmation of our Sages* that: "to whoever adds (note 1: effort in the service of Hashem), one adds (note 2: blessings)." Indeed, they themselves taught us that Hashem* asks the Jews to put into practice what He Himself performs. May Hashem* grant that, in this regard, you be a Chassid* and put into practice the words of the Mishnah*, in Tractate Avos*, chapter 5, Mishnah* 13, according to which: "there are four ways of giving tzedakah*... The Chassid wants to give himself and wants others to give as well."

You conclude by saying: "May Hashem* grant that the words of the verse be fulfilled: 'Redeem your sin through tzedakah*.'" Such an expectation befits those who study mussar*, Ethics, and our masters impart to us an accomplishment far more important. Indeed, one should not content oneself with what, after all, remains linked to the injunction: "Depart from evil." One must therefore pray and forcefully demand that "Do good" be fulfilled (note 3: Increasing light is a greater accomplishment than banishing darkness, which involves direct contact with evil) — that your attitude enable you to obtain light, vitality, and strength, materially and spiritually. This is self-evident.

במענה למכתבו מד' וי"ד טבת והקודמם, נעם לי לקרות במכתבו האחרון אשר מרוצה מאד שזכה להיות בין התורמים וכו', ויהי רצון שגם בזה יקיים מרז"ל מעלין בקודש, ובודאי אשר השי"ת ימלא הבטחתו כמרז"ל כל המוסיף מוסיפין לו שהרי הודיעונו שמה שמצוה לישראל לעשות הוא עושה, ויהי רצון שגם בזה יהי' חסיד ובמילא יעשה כדבר משנה (אבות פרק ה"א משנה י"ג) ד' מדות בנותני צדקה, הרוצה שיתן ויתנו אחרים חסיד.

ובזה להעיר שמה שמסיים בענין האמור, הלואי שיקיים בזה וחטאך בצדקה פרוק, אף שמתאימה תקוה זו לבעלי המוסר, גדולה מזה הורונו רבותינו נשיאנו, שאין להסתפק בהנ"ל, שהרי סו"ס זהו בהקו דסור מרע, אלא שצריך להתפלל ולבקש ובתוקף גם בהקו דועשה טוב להמשיך ע"י הנ"ל אור וחיות וכח הן בגשמיות והן ברוחניות וק"ל...
