After a long interruption, I have received your letter. You speak of the harshness of the decree. One must, of course, remove these thoughts from your mind, for:
A) They have no foundation.
B) One knows the saying and the teaching of our masters, in every generation, according to which: "When one thinks that all is well, all is indeed well."
C) One knows that the determining factor in a person's conduct, when confronted with doubt, not knowing whether an initiative is positive or not, consists in examining its consequences on concrete action. In this case, thoughts about the harshness of the decree weaken good actions, lead to sadness and despair — which is forbidden and excluded, not only by the intellect of holiness, but also by common sense.
Instead of all this, all the members of the family should, in my opinion, feel a sacred obligation to ensure that the children of the deceased follow, on a daily basis, the path of the Torah* and the mitzvos*. This is the fundamental element — not only for themselves, but also for the deceased — and it is infinitely more important than the eulogies that are published or the speeches delivered before a great crowd. It is surely unnecessary to prove or explain this, so evident is it.

לאחרי הפסק הארוך נתקבל מכתבה, ומובן שמה שכותבת ברוע הגזירה על וכו', פשוט שצריך לשרש מחשבות כאלו וכיו"ב: א) מפני שאין להם יסוד. ב) כידוע פתגם הוראת רבותינו נשיאינו דור אחר דור, טראכט גוט וועט זיין גוט, ג) לפי הידוע אבן הבוחן בהנהגת האדם במקום ספק, האם רצוי הדבר או לא, הוא לראות השפעת הדבר על הפועל והמעשה, ורואים במוחש, אשר מחשבות כהאמור (בהנוגע לרוע הגזירה), מביאות לחלישות בפעולות טובות, לעצבות יאוש וכו' דברים האסורים ומושללים לא רק מצד שכל דקדושה אלא גם מצד שכל האנושי, ותמורת זה הרי לדעתי, חוב קדוש על כל חברי המשפחה להשתדל ולחזור ולהשתדל אשר יו"ח הנפטר... ע"ה ילכו בדרך התורה והמצוה בחיי היום יומים ... מובן שזהו העיקר הגדול. ולא רק בהנוגע לעצמם אלא גם בהנוגע להנפטר, וחשוב שלא בערך הרבה יותר מהספדים הנדפסים או הנאומים באסיפות עם, ובודאי אין צורך בהוכחת דבר פשוט כזה או בביאורו...
