I have received your book, the Mi Nasan*, a commentary on the Mechissa Yaakov*. I thank you for having thought to send it to me and I seize this opportunity to remind you of the following point. It seems to me that, during one of our discussions, you told me that you were compiling a collection of proverbs found in the books of the Sages* of Israel from the Middle Ages (note 2: See, on this subject, Letters no. 448 and 457). I believe I emphasized to you the importance of this undertaking, which is greatly needed. Since then, I have heard nothing more about it.

Now, I have just learned of the publication, in the Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, of a collection of parables and sayings of the medieval Sages*, authored by Professor Davidson. This work, published by the Rav Kook Institute, includes more than three thousand sayings, with their sources and their various versions having similar content. But, in my opinion, this number is very limited, so that there still remains a place that you can occupy. I would like to know whether you are working on this project, in which case you must consult Professor Davidson's book in order to make comparisons and additions.

ובהזדמנות זו הנני לעוררו, על אשר כמדומה שבאחת משיחותינו סיפר לי כ' אשר עורך הוא אוצר פתגמים מספרי ימי הבינים של גדולי ישראל, וכמדומה שבשעת מעשה עוררתי על נחיצות הדבר ועל הדרישה שישנה בזה, ומאז לא שמעתי ממנו דבר אודות הענין.

והנה ז"ע נודעתי אשר באה"ק ת"ו הדפיסו אוצר המשלים והפתגמים מספרות ימי הבינים מאת פרופ. דוידסון, בהוצאת מוסד הרב קוק הכולל יותר משלשת אלפים פתגמים (ותולדותיהם, ז.א. נוסחאות שונות בתוכן דומה), וכיון שלדעתי המספר הנ"ל הוא מועט ביותר, הרי מקום הניחו למי שיזכה בזה להתגדר בו, ואתענין לדעת אם עובד כ' בהנ"ל, שאז בטח יש לכ' מקודם לראות הספר דפרופ. דוידסון הנדפס, לשם השואה ומילואים.
