Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5981 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 16 · Letter 209 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem*,
11 Teves* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, of manifold accomplishments, Rav Elchanan* (note 1: Rav E. Halpern, of London),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I have received your letter from the eve of the Festival of Lights (note 2: Chanukah), which reached me the day before yesterday, together with the book "Marginta de Rabbi B.," complete edition. I thank you very much for your response and for having thought to send me this book.
May Hashem* grant that you redouble your ardor in the Torah*, in order to magnify it and embellish it. This includes (note 3: See, on this subject, Letter no. 4328) both the study of the Torah* in its most basic form and at its most elevated stage — which is the study of children, as stated by the Rambam*, at the end of the second chapter of the Laws of Torah Study. In the words of the Alter Rebbe*, such study is indeed the most elevated, even if it is by no means disinterested, even if it is adopted out of fear of the rod held by the teacher, as specified in the Tanya*, at page 155a. This can be compared to the study that transcends the study whose purpose is to lead to action, as indicated in Tractate Chulin* 66b.
In our era, the mitzvah* and the necessity are essentially the study that makes it possible to bring together the two trees of the Torah* — that is, the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge — to unite them, one and the other, "until they become one in your hand." You should consult the Zohar*, volume 3, pages 126b and 157a, which is elucidated, according to Chassidus* Chabad*, in the Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 26, and in his Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Shelach, from page 42b onward — until the wellsprings* spread to the outside and the promise is fulfilled according to which: "My Name shall be read as it is written" — the unification between the Revealed Face of the Holy One, blessed be He, and His hidden dimension.
With my respects and my blessing,
P.S.: As is my custom and as a mark of appreciation, I quickly reviewed this book, although I did not have the time, and on this occasion I drafted several notes:
A) At the beginning of the book, regarding the verse: "And there was light": One may ask what new idea is introduced by this commentary. This is, indeed, what our Sages* say in Midrash Bereishis Rabbah*, chapter 42, paragraph 4, which is cited at the beginning of this text.
Likewise, it is stated that the light that was hidden is that of the sun. However, various texts establish that the light created on the first day and the light of the sun are not the same. One can also deduce this from the fact that the light of the sun was hidden within its sheath and will emerge from it only in the World to Come. This is not the case for the hidden light, of which it is simply said: "It is preserved for the World to Come." Of course, this distinction has a precise significance.
B) At the end of the book: "The eighteen..." (note 4: "Yeshayahu pronounced eighteen curses against Israel, but he was not calmed until he stated this verse (3:5): 'The youth shall be insolent toward the elder,' as reported in Tractate Chagigah 14a"): It is stated that the Torah* has seventy interpretations, and our Sages* specify that the Jews will first arrive at teshuvah*, then the king Moshiach* will come — even though there are several opinions on the nature of this teshuvah*, according to Tractate Sanhedrin* 97b. The first seventeen curses had the effect of making it more difficult. Indeed, those who achieve teshuvah* for their own actions also share a collective responsibility with the other Jews, for they should have reacted to prevent their transgressions. As for those who do indeed seek to dissuade them from acting wrongly, our Sages* affirm that they may even resort to rebukes, reprimands, and curses.
Certainly, Hashem* knows that if these men had protested, they would not have been heeded — but did they themselves know this, as our Sages* note in Tractate Shabbos* 55a? To repair all of this, Yeshayahu* made it known that: "the youth shall be insolent toward the elder," so that these men would realize that they would not be heeded, thereby removing this objection. Consequently, he was indeed calmed, for in this way he was repairing the consequences of the seventeen preceding curses. One can thus understand the specification made by our Sages* that "if the Jews arrive at teshuvah*, they will immediately be redeemed," as reported by the Rambam* in his Laws of Teshuvah, chapter 9, paragraph 5, and as stated by the Alter Rebbe* in the Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, chapter 11.
