Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5976 — Tzedakah
Volume 16 · Letter 204
By the grace of Hashem*,
8 Teves* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I am responding to your letter of the second day of Rosh Chodesh*, with what it contained, in which you present the discussions and the analyses. Now, an absolute assurance was given to us by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, reporting the words of the Mitteler Rebbe* regarding the Alter Rebbe*. By virtue of the self-sacrifice he demonstrated for Chassidus*, the Heavenly Court ruled that, in all matters concerning Torah*, fear of Hashem*, and good deeds, those who are bound to him and follow his path would prevail.
There is therefore no reason to be afraid, Heaven forbid, as suggested by those few lines in your letter. In the past, you observed difficulties and obstacles no less than these, and even greater. Despite this, we achieved victory. Indeed, the necessity of the moment is to spread the wellsprings* to the outside, especially among our Sefardi* brethren who, several generations ago, knew renown, glory, and splendor. Then, due to the vicissitudes of the period, the situation of many of them evolved in a direction that was not positive. This only increases the merit of those who strive to restore these values, especially through the luminary and the light of the deep dimension of the Torah* revealed in our era by Chassidus*. This teaching, several generations ago, was the province of the Sefardim*, who studied the Zohar* and everything pertaining to Kabbalah*. There is no need to say more, so evident is this.
I read, with pleasure, the account of the Chassidishe farbrengen* on the luminous day of 19 Kislev* and of the division of the tractates of the Talmud*, then of Chanukah*. The connection between these two points is quite evident. Indeed, the miracle of Chanukah* occurred with oil, which alludes to the "secrets of the secrets," brought precisely "to the entrance of one's home, toward the outside" — that is, to the secrets of the secrets of the intellect found on the outside, in the intellect of the animal soul.
The 19th of Kislev* is the Rosh Hashanah* of the study of Chassidus* and the Chassidic ways. It is the head — Rosh* — of the year and not its beginning. The head carries within it all the members of the body and vivifies them. Likewise, Rosh Hashanah* carries within it all the days of the year. May Hashem* grant that what pertains to 19 Kislev* be revealed in these days, in a visible and tangible good.
With my blessing to convey good news,
