Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5974 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 16 · Letter 202
By the grace of Hashem*,
7 Teves* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I am responding to your letter of the seventh day of Chanukah* and, in accordance with your request, I respond by advancing you ahead of the queue. You tell me that good and even excellent proposals for engagement are being made to you, and you ask me whether one should take into account what is stated in certain books regarding the count of names (note 1: Of the young man and the young woman, whose characters, according to certain books, would reveal an incompatibility).
We must adhere to the words of our holy masters in this matter and base ourselves on the terms of the verse: "You shall be wholehearted with Hashem*, your Elokim*." This is particularly true for engagements, of which it is said: "A wise woman comes from Hashem*." One must therefore strengthen one's commitment to the Torah* and mitzvos*, then consider these proposals from the perspective of adherence to the faith and what pertains to it, verifying that the young woman is "wise" in her fear of Hashem*.
It is absolutely evident that what is stated in the books you mention does not apply to one who takes no account of it. Moreover, one can truly question whether the books you cite in your letter are worthy of trust. Perhaps these statements were made only for certain places, for certain communities. This is, indeed, what is said regarding several paragraphs of the warnings of Rabbi Yehudah HaChassid*, and how much more so is this the case here. Thus, it has been explained that Rabbi Yehudah HaChassid* addressed himself only to his descendants, whereas he is, moreover, recognized by all the masters of the Kabbalah*.
And if this was so in that era, how much more is it the case now, when one faces various obstacles and veils regarding engagements. There is therefore absolutely no reason to take this into account (note 2: The Rebbe notes, at the bottom of the page: "One must take into account, however, the injunction of the Mishnah according to which 'at eighteen, one enters under the marriage canopy,' and the well-known teachings of our Sages, in particular in Tractates Kiddushin 29b and Pesachim 113a. These, without doubt, are worthy of trust and they were stated for all situations alike"), except for certain specific provisions introduced by Rabbi Yehudah HaChassid*. If, according to the Torah* and the fear of Hashem*, the proposal is good and even excellent, accept it! May Hashem* grant that it take place at a good and fruitful time.
With my blessing,
