A) I am responding to your letter of 5 Teves*, in which you ask me why there are two ways of counting the Sefiros*: Chochmah*, Binah*, Daas*, or else Keser*, Chochmah*, Binah* — then Chesed*, Gevurah*, Tiferes*, Netzach*, Hod*, Yesod*, and Malchus* (note 2: The Rebbe presents them in three groups: those of the intellect — Chochmah, Binah, Daas or Keser, Chochmah, Binah; those of emotion — Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferes; and those of concrete action — Netzach, Hod, Yesod, Malchus).
The explanation of all this, according to Kabbalah*, is well known. If one cites Keser*, one does not mention Daas*. Several texts of Chassidus* also justify this, in particular the Likkutei Torah* of the Alter Rebbe*, at Parshas* Shelach, page 49c.
B) What is the essential idea of Chassidus* Chabad*? It is quite evident that one cannot answer such a question within the framework of a letter, all the more so since the explanations on this subject have already been published. You should therefore consult the Kuntres Toras HaChassidus* and the Kuntres Limud HaChassidus* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us.
You surely know the three daily studies that concern everyone, pertaining to the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*. These are well known and, at the very least, you will adopt them in the future.

במענה למכתבו מה' טבת, בו שואל למה שבמספר העשר ספירות נמצאים שני אופנים חב"ד או כח"ב חג"ת נהי"מ.
והנה הנ"ל קוטבו הענין הידוע בקבלה, כשהכתר נמנה אין הדעת נמנה, ומבואר הענין באיזה מקומן בתורת החסידות, ומהם בלקוטי תורה לרבנו הזקן פ' שלח, דף מ"ט ע"ג.
ב) מהו ענין עיקר שיטת חסידות חב"ד וכו'. - מובן ששאלות כאלו אין מקום לענות עלי' במכתב, ובפרט שמבוארים כבר הענינים בדברים שבדפוס, ויעוין קונטרס תורת החסידות וקונטרס לימוד החסידות לכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.
בטח יודע משלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים, ועכ"פ ישמור אותם מכאן ולהבא.
