Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5962 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 16 · Letter 190
By the grace of Hashem*,
Seventh candle of Chanukah* 5718,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the attention of the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yosef*, who is called Dr. Burg (note 1: Leader of the National Religious Party. See, on his subject, Letters no. 3159 and 3246),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I have received your letter, acknowledging receipt of my wishes for a good year, and I thank you for it. The purpose of the present letter is to express my pain, following the news that reached me. You went to Kfar Chabad* in order to participate in the Chassidishe farbrengen* on the luminous day of 19 Kislev*. Yet, due to the crowding and perhaps even the lack of organization, you were unable to make your way through the crowd. Subsequently, the mayor of the Kfar* cleared a path for you so that you could reach the platform, but, for a certain reason, you did not wish to do so.
Of course, all of this pains me, from two perspectives (note 2: For all those present and for Dr. Burg himself). A great crowd was assembled in that place and, were it not for your refusal, it could have benefited from your words of encouragement. And you will forgive me for adding that you yourself also lost thereby. For, if our Sages* say that the Shechinah* reveals itself whenever ten Jews gather — as explained by the one whose joy we celebrate on 19 Kislev*, the Alter Rebbe*, even if those Jews do not discuss Torah*, as explained in the Iggeres HaKodesh*, chapter 23, in wondrous terms — how much more so in the presence of several dozen Jews.
Now, it is certain that words of Torah* were spoken there — words, moreover, permeated with light and warmth. These words emanated from the heart and penetrated into the heart. And the heart has several levels: its superficial aspect, its deep dimension, the essence of this depth — or, in the terms of the Alter Rebbe*, "the revelation of the point of the heart," "the essence of the point of the heart," as explained in the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Tetzei, at page 36a. At a Chassidishe farbrengen*, it is established that the participants strive to reach the greatest possible depth and, very often, they succeed. Moreover, you specified to me, during our discussion, that you are now part of the Rebbe*'s family through your wife, which strengthens even further what has just been said.
Certainly, it is useless to complain about the past. Nevertheless, this does not exempt me from making my position known and from excluding — or, at the very least, weakening — the context that allowed this to happen, that is, the manner in which you reacted to the lack of organization or whatever other term you wish to use to define this situation. This also has a bearing on the future, for all Jews bear a collective responsibility and the action of one has an effect on all the others. In a pleasant manner, and to borrow an expression of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, "if someone sneezes at the North Pole, this can have a consequence for all of humanity."
And a similar concern is entrusted to similar days. Indeed, I learned all of this during Chanukah*, when it is a mitzvah* to multiply light, which is impossible without warmth. And this light multiplies (note 3: Since the candles of the festival are lit in increasing order) and spreads. Therefore, warmth excludes a reaction such as yours.
With my respects and my blessing on the occasion of Chanukah*,
According to the fragments of information reaching me, it seems that the united front (note 4: Of all the religious parties, with a view to elections) will soon be discussed. In any case, one does not mix two occasions of "joy," and we will therefore return to this later, even though I am disappointed by the limited effect that my letter to you on this subject has had in the past. Nevertheless, in accordance with a Chassidic saying, one must try and try again. Indeed, the halachah* is of the same opinion, and our Sages* go so far as to add: "a hundred times if necessary."
