By the grace of Hashem*,

I bless you and greet you,

I am responding to your letter from the first candle, in which you tell me about a surgical operation for the removal of a gland.

Whenever an operation is performed — that is, an irreversible act — one must consult specialists in the matter, at least two and if possible three. I am certain that your father-in-law will not hold it against you. Indeed, according to the teaching of our Torah*, Torah of life, the opinion of two or three persons has much more value than that of a single person.

Human logic indicates that this must be so. A man, whoever he may be, remains a limited creature. When he consults with two or three persons, the words of the verse apply: "Salvation comes from many counselors."

You write to me and receive this response during Chanukah*, which implies permanent addition. May Hashem* therefore grant that your mazal* be luminous and that the wish of your heart be fulfilled.

במענה למכתבה מנר הראשון, בו כותבת אודות נתוח להוציא בלוטה וכו'.

והנה כבכל עניני נתוחים, ז.א. מעשה שאי אפשר להחזירו. צריך לשאול דעת מומחים במקצוע, לכה"פ שנים ומה טוב שלשה. ובטחוני שגם חמי' שי' לא יקפיד על זה, והרי גם על פי הוראת תורתנו תורת חיים יש תוקף לדעת שנים ושלשה שלא בערך לתוקף דעת יחיד, והרי גם שכל האנושי מסכים על זה, כי האדם יהי' מי שיהי' אינו אלא נברא מוגבל והתייעצות שנים שלשה יחד הרי תשועה ברוב יועץ, וכיון שכותבת מכתבה ונתקבל ונשלח המענה בימי חנוכה, דענינם מוסיף והולך באור, הנה יהי רצון שיאיר מזלם במילוי משאלות לבבם לטובה.
