Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5956 — Shidduchim
Volume 16 · Letter 184
By the grace of Hashem*,
29 Kislev* 5718,
Brooklyn,
I bless you and greet you,
I am responding to your letter from the eve of Chanukah*, in which you inform me of the match being proposed to you, which suits you. You see in this a double mitzvah* — the salvation of a Jewish soul that will return to its source, to a way of life based on Torah* and mitzvos*, on the one hand, and marriage on the other.
In general, our Sages* say regarding this that "one does not bundle mitzvos* together." The common practice is that two people do not marry in order for one to educate the other, and even less so in order to modify the most essential aspects of the other's life. Moreover, according to what your letter seems to indicate, this young man has adopted such a way of life for several years already, and suddenly he would be asked to submit to Torah* and mitzvos* on a daily basis — that is, to change his habits every day, at various times. And even if one accepts the principle of this change, one does not always imagine what it represents when one has had, for a very long time, the opposite behavior.
You do not specify in your letter how this young man reacted to the condition you set, and especially in what manner he responded. Does he accept it because he has no choice, or does he do so willingly, and even with joy and enthusiasm?
In any case, even if his response was the most satisfactory, you conclude your letter by saying that you have not set a date. It would therefore be good for this young man to adopt immediately the way of life you expect of him. The coming weeks will be, in a sense, a trial period for him and for you.
May Hashem*, Who extends His Providence to each individual, guide you on the path that will be good for you — of a visible and tangible good.
With my blessing,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
the secretary,
