I have received your letters of 22 and 23 Kislev*, along with their contents. I am sending you a letter for that individual, and if he needs an additional explanation, you will surely find the words to provide it.

Regarding your state of health, the days of Chanukah* correspond to an addition of a visible and tangible good, perceptible even outward, and it is therefore certain that the same applies to the holy Jewish body. Indeed, the Tanya* says that "the physical body appears, to our eyes of flesh (note 1: To resemble that of other nations)... He has chosen us from among the peoples and the tongues." Now, true choice is conceivable only in the Essence of Hashem* (note 2: The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "You should consult the talk of Simchas Torah* 5669" — 1909 — of the Rebbe Rashab*). And one will advance in this direction until the eighth day, which carries within it the seven that precede it — the weekly cycle and what surpasses it — as various Chassidic texts explain. Furthermore, the Maggid* (note 3: Of Mezeritch) connects shemini* — eighth — with shemen* — oil (note 4: Which alludes to the essence).

You inform me of your birthday, and on this occasion, you will surely adopt the custom of the Chassidim*. May Hashem* grant you a year of success in your communal accomplishments and in your personal endeavors, the one depending on the other. This concerns, in particular, the necessity of obedience. Indeed, you have still not answered my question, following the discussion we had here when you visited me with your wife. I am therefore greatly afraid that an improvement, a completion, is still necessary in this matter.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתביו מכ"ב וכ"ג כסלו עם המוסגר בהם, ומוסגר בזה מכתבי ל... שי', ובאם זקוק לתוספת הסברה, בטח ימצא אותיות המתאימות בזה, ומובן אשר בהנוגע לבריאות - הרי ימי חנוכה ענינם שמוסיף והולך בטוב הנראה והנגלה עד שנראה גם בחוץ, ופשוט אשר כן הוא בעניני גוף הישראלי אשר קדוש הוא (וכמובא בתניא אשר בהגוף החומרי הנדמה לעיני בשר וכו' בחר בנו מכל עם ולשון, ובפרט שבחירה האמיתית אין זה אלא במהותו ועצמותו וכו'*) וילך גם בזה באופן דמוסיף והולך עד לשמונה, שהוא - הכולל שבעת הימים ימי ההיקף ומה שלמעלה מהם, וכמבאור בדא"ח בכ"מ, וכביאור הרב המגיד שמיני מלשון שמן.

ולהודעתו מיום ההולדת שלו, ובטח ינהג במנהג אנ"ש ביום ההולדת, ויהי רצון שתהי' שנת הצלחה אצלו בענינים הכללים ובענינים הפרטים, אשר הא בהא תליא, ובזה ג"כ - הענין פון פאלגען (כי מהעדר המענה שלו בהנוגע לשאלתי בזה ובפרט בהמשך לשיחתנו כאן כשבקר עם זוגתו תחי' חוששני שעדיין ענין זה דורש מילוי שיפור ושלימות).
