All that concerns man — in particular the Jew — is an effect of Divine Providence*. Moreover, in the words of the Mishnah*, it is said of all the accomplishments of a Jew: "I was created to serve my Creator."

I therefore seize the opportunity afforded by this letter to remind you of the words of the Arizal*, cited in the Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 26, according to which, in these generations, it is "a mitzvah* to reveal this Wisdom" — the inner dimension of the Torah*. The Kuntres Etz HaChaim* of the Rebbe Rashab* — father of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us — explains at length how important all of this is, how it strengthens the study of the revealed part of the Torah*, the practice of mitzvos*, and the service of Hashem* in general.

Upon learning the words of Rabbi Chaim Vital* — the principal disciple of the Arizal* — in his introduction to the Shaar HaHakdamos*, which emphasizes the necessity of such study, one's hair can stand on end. You should also consult the halachah*, which incorporates the words of the Mishnah*, in the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 98, and in the Rema*. One can observe that only the study of the inner dimension of the Torah* and the adoption of its practices provide the person of the present orphaned era with the means to put all of this into practice three times a day. If this is so for every individual, how much more so for one who devotes himself to the education of the Children of Israel. Indeed, every addition concerning him is multiplied among his students. This is self-evident.
