By the grace of Hashem*,

24 Kislev* 5718,

Brooklyn,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

After a particularly long interruption, I have received your letter of 22 Kislev*, and I am surprised to note that you do not specify whether you participated in the Chassidishe farbrengen* on the luminous day of 19 Kislev*, which has just taken place. I hope that you know the history of this day and all that pertains to it.

You refer to your personal concerns and tell me that despite your efforts, nothing concrete has been obtained. Now, one must take into account the most common situation, and in general, such a state of affairs is explained by the disproportionate attention given to what is by no means essential. As a result, one fails to consider proposals that are good in the essential domains and even in what is secondary, when only certain totally minor aspects are unsatisfactory. If one is willing to accept the unwavering truth, one can understand that perfection does not exist in the world, and that only the Holy One, blessed be He, is perfect. It is therefore certain that the groom or the bride are not perfect, and our Torah*, Torah of life, was given precisely in order to ascend, from one stage to the next, toward the wholeness of humankind.

Of course, my purpose is not to deliver a moral rebuke, but to point out to you that it may be so in your case as well. If this is indeed the case, it is not surprising that things are as they are. Nevertheless, everything depends upon you. If, in the future, you examine the essential aspect of the proposals — that which concerns Torah* and mitzvos* — if you address your prayer to the One Who arranges matches, as our Sages* emphasize, and as it is said: "A wise woman comes from Hashem*," then Hashem* will grant that you find the spouse who suits you, materially and spiritually.

Divine Providence* has entrusted you with the role of educating the Children of Israel. The more sincerely you engage in this divine mission, the more you will hasten the blessing of Hashem* in all your needs — in general, and in this one in particular. May Hashem* grant that you convey good news of all this to me soon.

With my blessing,

On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,

the secretary,
