By the grace of Hashem*,

After a particularly long interruption, I have received your letter of the 17th (note 1: The Rebbe writes "Tov" — good — a word whose numerical value is seventeen) of the month of deliverance (note 2: Of the Alter Rebbe — that of Kislev). You tell me that your situation has unfortunately not changed, that you observe no development, that your condition is very bad, which would be unthinkable.

My opinion is very clear. All of this is not accurate. If your situation has not changed, there is no reason to say "unfortunately," but rather to recall the words of the verse: "Hashem*, your Elokim*, will bless you in all that you do" — which means that there must be, on your part, a genuine action, and that it is not a matter of merely discharging an obligation.

You must be able to say that you have acted, and that it is therefore not unfortunate to observe that the situation has not changed, for this is how it is in this world, as the Torah* has informed us. Various texts specify this, in particular the Kuntres U'Maayan*, discourse 23, emphasizing the necessity of action on the part of man.

How much more so must this be the case for becoming engaged. Our Sages* say that one must search as though seeking something one has lost. In this matter, it is therefore surprising that, according to you, it will be impossible to find a match in Eretz Yisrael*, which implies that you must go abroad. The opposite is true. If you wish to adopt my advice, cancel this decision completely and strive, as one who fears Hashem* must do, to find a good match there. The Holy One, blessed be He, arranges matches, and He will enable you to build yours at a good and fruitful time. May Hashem* grant that you make this decision as quickly as possible and fully. And you will become engaged as soon as possible.

What has just been said applies equally to your settlement. Granted, in this matter, such a great effort is not necessary, in accordance with the teaching of our Sages* previously cited, but here too, effort and concrete action are indispensable. In a natural manner, the intellect directs the emotions, and may Hashem* therefore grant that you master yourself, that you settle in Eretz Yisrael*. There, you will become engaged and establish yourself. Thus, you will announce good news to me as soon as possible.

לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך נתקבל מכתבו מטו"ב לחדש הגאולה, ומ"ש שמצב לא השתנה לדאבונו וכו', אינו רואה שום התפתחות, ושמצבו בכל רע ר"ל.

הנה דעתי ברורה שכל הנ"ל אינו מתאים, ז.א. שמה שמצבו לא השתנה, אין זה כפי שמסיים לדאבונו, אלא בפשיטות מפני שאמר הכתוב וברכך ה' אלקיך בכל אשר תעשה , ותעשה פירושו, עשי' אמיתית, ולא בכדי לצאת ידי חובתו לחוד, שיוכל לאמר שכבר עשה מה, ובמילא אין בזה דאבון שלא השתנה המצב כיון שזוהי דרך עולמנו שהודיעה התורה, וכמבואר בכ"מ ומהם בקונט' ומעין מא' כ"ג שצ"ל דוקא ע"י עשיית האדם, ומכש"כ וק"ו בעניני שידוך, שעל זה אמרו רז"ל שצריכה להיות כמחזר אחר אבדתו, ובמילא בענין זה מוזר שהחליט בעצמו שקשה לפניו למצוא שידוך באה"ק ת"ו ודווקא בחו"ל - שזהו היפך המציאות, ואם לדעתי ישמע יעקור כלה החלטתו האמורה וישתדל באופן המתאים ליראי ה' בהנוגע לשידוך טוב והקב"ה המזווג זיווגים ימציא לו זיווגו בשעה טובה ומוצלחת, ויהי רצון שיחליט כהנ"ל בהקדם ובמילואו, וישתדך ג"כ בהקדם.

וע"ד כל האמור, הוא גם בהנוגע להסתדרותו, ואף שבעניני הסתדרות אין דרושה כ"כ יגיעה כהנ"ל וכמרז"ל דלעיל, אבל גם זה צ"ל יגיע כפיך ועשי' בעצמו להסתדר באה"ק ת"ו בהנוגע לשידוך וכן הסתדרות בכלל, ואז יבשר טוב בהנ"ל בהקדם.
