I am responding to your letter of 15 Kislev*, in which you briefly describe what you have experienced. You attribute what happened to sorcerers and sorcery.

Forget all of this completely! Strengthen your trust in Hashem*, Who extends His Providence to each individual. Nevertheless, you should have your tefillin* checked, as well as the mezuzos* of your home. Each weekday, before the morning prayer, you should give tzedakah*. After the morning prayer, including on Shabbos* and festivals, you should recite Tehillim* according to the monthly division.

You ask me how to repair (note 1: The transgressions committed). First and foremost, you must, with enthusiasm, seek to marry a virtuous woman. Furthermore, words of Torah* should be engraved in your memory, which means that you should learn them by heart. In particular, this should include several chapters of Mishnah* and at least one chapter of Tanya*, as stated in the Likkutei Torah* of the Alter Rebbe*, at the end of Parshas* Kedoshim*.

You should do likewise regarding the "fast of speech" (note 2: Consisting of speaking only words of Torah), for example. On the other hand, fasting from eating and drinking must be entirely excluded, for it goes against the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* and of Chassidus*. And I call "fast of speech" what is described in the Sefer HaToldos Maharach*, at page 72. But of course, this must be done without ostentation. No one should notice it. In the fitting manner, you should also act, with the greatest eagerness, for the education of Jewish children based on sacred values.

You surely participate in the Chassidishe farbrengens* that take place from time to time. Of course, such participation is not merely physical. It consists of listening to the words of encouragement that are spoken, and above all, of being positively transformed through them. And it is known that a note fell from Heaven, as the Alter Rebbe* reports (note 3: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5899), emphasizing that "what a Chassidishe farbrengen* can accomplish, the angel Michael cannot accomplish."

במענה על מכתבו מט"ו כסלו, בו כותב ראשי פרקים מאשר עבר עליו, ומה שתולה ומזכיר בעניני מכשפים כשפים וכו'.

הנה יסיח דעתו מזה לגמרי מכל וכל, ויתחזק בבטחונו בהשם יתברך המשגיח על כל אחד ואחד בהשגחה פרטית, אלא שצריך לבדוק את התפילין שלו וכן את המזוזות בדירתו, ובכל יום חול לפני התפלה בבקר יפריש איזה פרוטות לצדקה, ולאחרי התפלה בבקר, וגם בש"ק ויום טוב יאמר השיעור תהלים חדשי - כפי שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש -

ובמ"ש אודות התיקון. - הנה לכל לראש צריך להתעסק במרץ בענין שידוך עם אשה כשרה, ושיהיו דבר תורה חקוקים בזכרונו, זאת אומרת שידעם בעל פה, ומהם איזה פרקים משניות ועכ"פ פרק אחד מספר תניא קדישא (וע"פ מ"ש בלקוטי תורה לרבנו הזקן סוף פרשה קדושים), וכן ינהג בעניני תעניתים של דבור וכיו"ב, אבל מושלל בתכלית עניני תענית מאכילה ושתי' שזהו היפך תורת הבעל שם טוב, החסידות, וכוונתי בתענית של דבור הוא ע"פ מ"ש בספר תולדות מוהר"ש סוף עמוד ע"ב, אבל פשוט שצריך להיות בלי הבלטה והרגשה, שלא ירגישו הרואים, ובאופן המתאים עליו להשתדל במרץ הכי גדול גם כן לעניני חינוך בני ובנות ישראל על טהרת הקדש.

בודאי משתתף בהתועדות חסידותיות הנערכות מזמן לזמן, וכוונתי בהשתתפות הוא כמובן לא בהנוגע לענינים הגשמים אלא בהנוגע שמיעת דברי התעוררות הנאמרים בעת ההתועדות, והעיקר לשינוי לטוב על ידי זה, והרי ידוע פתקא דמשמיא נחית, דברי רבנו הזקן, אז וואס א חסידישע פארבריינגען קען אויפטאן קען מלאך מיכאל ניט אויפטאן.
