Igrot Kodesh · Letter 5934 — Chinuch
Volume 16 · Letter 162 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem*,
18 Kislev* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*
and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Raphael Chaim* (note 1: Rav R. Ch. Goldman),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I have seen the proofs of the Tiferes Tzion* (note 2: A work by Rav Yitzchak Zeev Yadler), a commentary on the Midrash Rabbah*, whose edition you are preparing. May Hashem* grant that you multiply your capacities in Torah*, with abundance. Indeed, our Sages* say in the Sifri*, Eikev 6:6: "Do you wish to know the One Who created the world by His Word? Study the Midrash*!" How much more so is this the case in our generation — that of ikvesa d'Meshicha* — whose darkness is intense. The study of this part of Torah* is then particularly important, in accordance with the parable stated by our Sages* in this regard, in Tractate Sotah* 40a. You should also consult the commentary of Rashi* on this reference.
As a mark of appreciation, and although my time does not permit me to examine these pages as would be necessary, I have consulted them to the extent my time allowed, and I enclose herewith two or three notes pertaining to the beginning of this commentary, which present, in particular, a teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* and one of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*. These are timely, for it is on 19 Kislev* that the Alter Rebbe* was liberated. Then began the spreading of the wellsprings* of his teaching — which is, in fact, that of the Baal Shem Tov* — in an ever broader manner.
The spreading of this teaching and its impact are the best proof that they constitute the obligation of this era and of every individual. It is necessary to devote a portion of one's time to the study of this teaching. The Arizal* said, indeed, that "in our era, it is a mitzvah* to reveal this form of Wisdom," as his great disciple, Rabbi Chaim Vital*, subsequently explained, developing an extensive commentary in his introduction to the Shaar HaHakdamos*, based on the words of the holy Zohar*.
May Hashem* grant that this undertaking hasten the end of our exile, and that we soon merit the fulfillment of the promise that knowledge, wisdom, and truth will multiply, so as to perceive the Creator according to the capacity of man, as it is said: "The earth shall be filled with the knowledge of Hashem*, as the waters cover the sea."
With my respects and my blessing,
P.S.: Notes — Page 1a: "Our Sages* say that the Torah* has seventy aspects."
Questions: What is the relationship between the first explanation of Rav H.V. and the second — "another explanation..." — since, according to the Tiferes Tzion*, the latter should not have been cited? One must understand them and determine why they are stated in this order, for the second seems simpler and should therefore have been stated first. And how can one define the pedagogue by his childlike aspect, as the Tiferes Tzion* does, when this aspect is hidden? And what of his greatness, since the pedagogue, although hidden, is indeed a master — but this is what the Oral Torah* states, as reported in Shemos Rabbah*, chapter 47, paragraph 1, cited by the Tiferes Tzion*?
The explanation of all this is as follows. The pedagogue is one who educates the child through simple and easy words. But here, he is entirely hidden and takes on another appearance, like the body of man destined for the worm, according to the explanation of the Mordechai*, regarding the expression "hidden for Hadassah*." Moreover, he is also "great," like "great Alexandria" — a single city, but a great one.
Rav H.V. applies the words of the verse "I was beside Him" to all parts of the Torah*. Its plain meaning is revealed and evident; its analytical meaning is hidden; its allusive meaning is also hidden, since it is limited to an allusion; and its esoteric meaning is great, as our Sages* state in Tractate Sotah* 28a. As such, it constitutes a category apart. But the Torah* says that all its parts are "beside Him." From this follows: "another explanation... He observed the Torah* and created the entire world" — "the revealed worlds and the hidden worlds that do not reveal themselves" — an expression alluding to four worlds: Assiyah*, Yetzirah*, Beriah*, Atzilus*, corresponding to the four levels of Torah* interpretation.
Page 1b: The Midrash Rabbah* explains: "Bereishis*: with the Torah* that is called Reishis*, beginning" — or: "for the Torah*." These are indeed two opposing explanations. The first relates to the world, to the creatures, which are the essential element. And our Sages* say (Bereishis Rabbah*, beginning of chapter 44) that "the mitzvos* were given solely to refine the creatures." It then states that the thought of Israel preceded that of the Torah*. The second explanation, by contrast, presents the Torah* as the essential point.
* * *
It is said that eagerness is without purpose as long as the day has not dawned. This is also stated by the commentary of Rashi* and the Tosafos*, at the same reference, in Tractate Pesachim* 4a.
