By the grace of Hashem*,

To the benevolence committee of the Lubavitch* study house,

in Montreal, may Hashem* grant you long life,

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I read with pleasure your letter from the eve of this past Shabbos*. You inform me of the appointment of a benevolence committee and its decisions regarding its manner of operation. May Hashem* grant you the success of multiplying good in the world. Our Sages* say, indeed, that gemilus chassadim* applies also to the wealthy.

Merit is conferred upon propitious days, and we are presently in the days between the liberation of 10 Kislev* and that of 19 Kislev*. Those whose joy we celebrate gave of themselves with mesirus nefesh* for the love of their fellow, in general, and for acts of benevolence in particular. As various texts report and explain in the most emphatic terms, the commandment "You shall love your fellow as yourself" is a vessel for "You shall love Hashem*, your Elokim*" — another commandment with which it forms a single entity. In chapter 9 of Iggeres HaKodesh*, the Alter Rebbe* explains that herein lies the essence of the service of Hashem* in the present period of ikvesa d'Meshicha*.

May Hashem* grant that very soon we merit to witness the conclusion and culmination of that passage in Iggeres HaKodesh*: "One will see with one's eyes the return of Hashem* to Tzion*." I extend my blessing to multiply such actions, with joy and enthusiasm, to receive good news, and to hold a joyous and fruitful Chassidishe farbrengen*.

בנועם קראתי המכתב מעש"ק העבר, בו כותבים אודות מינוי הועד של הגמ"ח והחלטתם באופני עבודתו. ויהי רצון אשר חפץ ה' בידם יצליח להרבות מדת החסד בעולם, וכידוע מאמר רז"ל, גדולה גמילות חסדים כו' בין לעשירים וכו'.

ומגלגלין זכות לימין זכין, הימים שבין ימי הגאולה יו"ד וי"ט כסלו, אשר בעלי השמחה מסרו נפשם על עניני אהבת ישראל בכלל וגמילות חסדים ביחוד, וכמסופר ומבואר בכ"מ בהפלאה אחרי הפלאה עד לאמרם אשר ואהבת לרעך כמוך, כלי הוא וחד עם ואהבת את ה' אלקיך, ובאגה"ק לרבנו הזקן סי' ט, איך כל עיקר עבודת ה' בעתים הללו בעקבות משיחא בזה הוא.

ויהי רצון אשר בקרוב ממש נזכה לסיום וחותם אגה"ק זו, יזכה לראות עין בעין בשוב ה' ציון וכו'.

בברכה להרבות פעולות בהאמור מתוך שמחה וטוב לבב ולבשורות טובות, ולהתועדות שמחה ופעילה.
