and devotes himself to communal needs,

I am responding to your letter concerning the Bar Mitzvah* celebration of your son.

You should consult the Zohar Chadash*, Parshas* Bereishis*, page 15d, which explains the reason for this celebration. The date on which it should be celebrated is, consequently, quite clear (note 2: On the actual date of the Bar Mitzvah itself). How, then, can one consider advancing the celebration before the date, for any reason whatsoever, because it would result in a strengthening of Torah* study and the practice of mitzvos*? Why should this manner of strengthening Yiddishkeit* be inferior to all others?

הנה יעיין בזהר חדש בראשית ט"ו ד, סיבת חגיגה זו שמזה פשוט מתי זמנה הוא, ואם ברצון מי שהוא לעשות איזה חגיגה מקודם לזה מאיזה סיבה שתהי', הרי מהיכי תיתי, אם יתוסף עי"ז בלימוד התורה וקיום המצות, ולמה יגרע זה הדרך להחזקת היהדות מדרכים אחרים.
