I am responding to your letter of December 1, acknowledging receipt of my blessing on the occasion of the new year and asking whether my letter was not addressed to another person bearing the same name, given that we have not corresponded until now.

You are correct — that was indeed the case. Nevertheless, everything is an effect of Divine Providence*, and may Hashem* therefore grant that these blessings be fulfilled, among all the other blessings that Jews wish one another. You know the account of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, according to which our Father Who is in Heaven, observing the good relations that Jews maintain and the blessings they exchange, fulfills them and, moreover, multiplies His blessings. It is the same with a father and his children, of flesh and blood. Indeed, the closeness among the children brings the greatest satisfaction to the father, who then multiplies the gifts he offers to his children.

You write: "I ascended to the Holy Land about ten years ago." I therefore have good hope that you strive, to the extent possible and in all that depends upon you, to ensure that this constitutes a true ascent — an ascent of the soul — drawing ever closer to its true objective and to Hashem*, Who gives the Torah* and the mitzvos*. Hashem* is infinite and knows no limit. By adopting conduct in accordance with the teaching He delivers in His Torah* — which shares the root of hora'ah*, meaning instruction — one embarks upon the path that leads toward Him. Indeed, all nations call this country the "Holy Land," because the Beis HaMikdash* and the holy sites are found there, because holy events took place there. And this holiness, as the Torah* explains, requires that one adopt the life of Torah* there.

במענה למכתבו מיום 1.12, מאשר קבלת מכתב ברכת השנה ושואל, אולי הי' המכתב מיועד לאיש אחר, אשר שמו כשמו, כיון שעד עתה לא עמד בקשור מכתבים לכאן.

והנה אף כי צדק בדבריו אלו בכל זה כיון שהכל בהשגחה פרטית, הנה יהי רצון אשר תקויימנה הברכות בתוך ברכות שאר בני ישראל המאחלים זה לזה, וכידוע סיפור רבנו הזקן בעל התניא והשו"ע אשר אבינו שבשמים, בראותו היחס הטוב וברכות הטובות שמאחלים בני ישראל זה לזה, מוסיף בברכותיו נוסף על מה שמקיים הברכות האמורות, וכדוגמא באב לבנים בבני אדם אשר קירוב הדעת שבין הבנים גורם לנחת רוח הכי גדול, ומוסיף האב במתנותיו לבניו אלו.

תקותי, אשר כיון שכלשונו במכתבו "עליתי ארצה לפני עשר שנים", בטח משתדל ככל היכולת והתלוי בו, שתהי' זה עלי' אמיתית ז.א. עליית הנשמה על ידי שמתקרבת יותר ויותר למטרת העלי' זהו השם יתברך נותן התורה והמצוה, אשר אין סוף הוא ובלי גבול, ועל ידי אורח חיים מתאים להוראתו בתורתו (לשון הוראה) מתעלים במסילה העולה אליו, והרי גם בפי כל עמי הארץ נקראת ארץ זו, ארץ הקדושה על שם בית המקדש ומקומות הקדושים ומאורעות הקדושים שאירעו בה, וקדושה כמבואר בתורה ע"י שחיים בה חיי תורה.
