Brooklyn

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Avraham Zalman (note 1: Rav A. Z. Wiener, of Cleveland),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 3 Kislev*, announcing good tidings — the establishment of a class of Chassidus*. May Hashem grant that not only will you achieve success in this matter, but that you will furthermore strengthen this study. Indeed, our Sages* assure us that "great is study that leads to action" — and therefore to an increased engagement on the path and in the practices of Chassidus*. For nothing stands in the way of the will and a strong determination.

Moreover, these days are more particularly propitious for this than the rest of the year — the 10th and 19th of Kislev*, the intermediate period, and the festival of Chanukah*. Indeed, it was on the 10th and 19th of Kislev* that the Alter Rebbe* and subsequently his son and successor, the Mitteler Rebbe*, were freed. This liberation below (in this world) furnished proof that increased strength was granted above (in the heavenly realm) to spread this teaching (note 2: that of Chassidus*).

Likewise, the victory of Chanukah* was won not against a simple opposition to the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, but rather, according to the formula retained in the prayer of Israel, against the attempt "to make them transgress the Decrees of Your Will" (Gezeiros Retzonecha*) — that is, those which one observes because they are the Will of the Creator, whether one understands them intellectually or not — "to make them forget Your Torah" — specifically "Yours." In fact, the ordinary study of the Torah* did not pose a problem for them, since it possesses an incontestable wisdom, as it is stated: "It is your wisdom and your understanding in the eyes of the nations." In fact, they refused the study based on the holiness of the Torah*, on its profound dimension — "Your Torah*." You will consult, on this subject, the lengthy explanation of the Bach* on the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 47, at the paragraph "What is written," according to which it is a Mitzvah* to spread the words of Rabbi Yehuda, in particular among those who dwell in the tent of the Torah* and devote themselves to its study.

You make no reference to your wife, but I hope that she too devotes herself to the dissemination of Judaism.

With my blessing,

For the Rebbe shlita*,

the secretary,
