To the young man who devotes himself to communal needs and carries out a sacred mission, David Tzvi (note 1: D. Tz. Merzbach, of Beer Sheva; see on his subject letters no. 4859 and 5448),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 27 Marcheshvan*. I read with pleasure that you have increased the number of your students. Some of them are distinguished not only by their knowledge of the Torah*, but also by their fear of Hashem and their good conduct. It is surely unnecessary to emphasize to you how important this is. Every action, every intervention in this direction is therefore justified. You make reference to a counselor (madrich*). One may assume that it is the responsibility of the administrators to search for one. They know the students of the Yeshivah*, as well as those who have already left it and who are capable of assuming these functions.
You do not specify whether practical laws (halachos*) needed in daily life are studied in your institution. Perhaps the omission is only in your letter. In any case, this study is a necessity, particularly in our era. Indeed, previously, everyone knew what conduct to adopt from what he saw in his parents' home, and even from what occurred in the street, or even more clearly from the synagogue, which one attended three times a day. This is no longer the case in this orphan generation, and it is therefore all of this that must be accomplished by the school in which the student finds himself (note 2: the Rebbe uses this term in both masculine and feminine).
One will therefore begin with the basics and the most common laws. And may Hashem grant that such study be implemented even in the higher Yeshivos*. For, due to our many transgressions, the knowledge of the laws of Orach Chaim* — the most common and everyday — is particularly weak. And "a transgression committed through ignorance is considered as..." (note 3: committed deliberately).
Since we have entered the month of Kislev*, that of liberation and victory, approaching in particular the luminous day of the 19th of Kislev*, the Rosh Hashanah* of Chassidus* and of Chassidic* ways, may Hashem grant that you devote yourself to the spreading of the wellsprings* (note 4: of Chassidus*) in every place you can reach. May Hashem grant you the success of conveying good tidings of all this.
With my blessing,
I enclose a letter of good wishes for a good year, returned from the Holy Land because its address was imprecise.
