Greetings and blessings,
You ask me whether you should seek a match (shidduch*) for your son. In this domain as in others, it is not appropriate to disturb one's son or daughter as long as a specific and concrete proposal has not been presented. Indeed, what purpose is there in letting him know that one has conceived such a plan when there is still nothing tangible? Moreover, this depends, at least in part, on his own situation.
You specify the reason for which the marriage of your second son has been deferred. Indeed, he has debts, although the bride's family considers for its part that this situation poses no problem. You therefore do not know what to do in this matter.
All of this is astonishing and surprising. You know the statement of our Sages*, commented upon by the Likkutei Torah*, at the end of Parshas Bracha*, according to which sustenance is granted to a Jew for his wife. Perhaps he is therefore in difficulty precisely because he is not married. As for the argument that he does not have proper clothing, you will agree that it is ridiculous in a domain as important as marriage, which conditions one's entire life. And even if it were certain that some people mock, the beginning of all four sections of the Shulchan Aruch* emphasizes that: "One shall not be affected by mockers."
Moreover, in this case, it is merely an impression. No one mocks such a thing, not even in the United States, which is renowned worldwide for the preponderant place given to money. Many Jews here, including among those who did not receive their education in a Chassidic* home or from former students of the Lubavitch Yeshivah*, marry with the intention of subsequently attending the Kollel* for several years, with the agreement of both spouses, even if this results in a modest standard of living.
I am surprised that on such an obvious point, a question must be posed across another continent and, when one obtains an answer, it is not certain that it will have its effect and be of use. Furthermore, it is even more astonishing to observe that the parents apparently accept this reasoning no less than the son. Who would have believed it? You also ask me why there is any rush. Here again, this is very surprising, beyond even what has been said above. Indeed, everyone knows his own situation, and one knows what our Sages* say on this subject. This is self-evident.
May Hashem grant that you convey good tidings to me of all this, and that these tidings be in the spirit of Chassidus*.
With my blessing,
M. Schneerson,
