Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 24 Marcheshvan*, in which you present me with the divergent opinions of the doctors you have consulted.
One point, however, is not very clear in your letter. If the doctors with divergent opinions were consulted at different times, this may mean that the situation has evolved in the interim. If, on the other hand, they were consulted at the same time, it simply means that they disagree. In any case, one must first try wearing a belt and see what effect it has. Perhaps this will be sufficient, without any other treatment being necessary.
I seize this opportunity to point out to you something astonishing and surprising. The few times you were here, several things were not in order and were unsatisfactory. One time, you came without the authorization of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* of your city. Another time, you did not even present yourself for the examination — neither for the revealed dimension of the Torah* nor for Chassidus* — although this examination was organized by the administration of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* here, at my request. Yet another time, you did indeed take the examination, but you did not achieve good results.
It is quite clear that all of this is by no means satisfactory, particularly in our generation, and especially for a student of Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*, who must be "a candle to illuminate" — that is, to exert a positive influence on others. For this, it is essential to set a good example, and from this affirmative formulation, one can also deduce the negative. This is self-evident.
May Hashem grant that at least in the future, all of this be rectified, in the manner explained in the letter of the Alter Rebbe*, Iggeres HaTeshuvah*, at the end of chapter 9: "One who was accustomed to read one page will read two."
With my blessing to convey good tidings of all this,
For the Rebbe shlita*,
the secretary,
