To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav David Meir (note 1: Rav D. M. Shulman, of Brooklyn; see on his subject letter no. 5286),
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your letter requesting a blessing, dated 23 Marcheshvan*. Without making a vow, when I go at the end of the week (note 2: on the eve of Rosh Chodesh*) to the holy resting place (Ohel*) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, I will mention your name and that of your wife, so that you may obtain the fulfillment of your needs, in accordance with the content of your letter.
It will then be Yom Kippur Katan* preceding Rosh Chodesh Kislev*, the month of liberation — the liberation of all who have merited to partake in the study of Chassidus* and all that pertains to it. And the saying of our holy masters is well known, that the 19th of Kislev* is the Rosh Hashanah* of the study of Chassidus* and of Chassidic* ways, which are, in particular, the application of the principle "you shall surely help him" — that is, the body — as the Baal Shem Tov* explains. It is therefore fitting to exclude fasts and mortifications.
Furthermore, the Alter Rebbe* and his son, the Mitteler Rebbe*, emphasize that the term used is Rosh Chodesh* — "head" and not "beginning" of the month. Indeed, the head carries within it the vitality of all the limbs of the body, and likewise Rosh Chodesh* carries within it all the days of the month. It is known that all of this begins during the Shabbos* that blesses the month (Shabbos Mevarchim*). Then, Yom Kippur Katan* accomplishes the preparation that enables all the revelations. Our Sages* tell us that by opening an orifice as small as the point of a needle, one obtains an opening as wide as the gateway of the Sanctuary (Ulam*) — specifically the Sanctuary, which was very large and always open, for no door could close it, Heaven forbid.
With my blessing to convey good tidings of all this, and in the formulation of our master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, for "a healthy winter,"
