Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 16 Marcheshvan* and to the one that preceded it. Of course, I am not at all satisfied with what I read between these lines. You have not accorded the necessary attention to the manner in which you earn your livelihood. As a result, the merchandise you acquired has a defect. Not only is there wastefulness in this, which the Holy One, blessed be He, forbids and which therefore falls under the mitzvos*, but moreover, there is harm to tzedakah*, on the part of someone who allocates an important share of his income to it.

Of course, the verse says: "If you eat by the effort of your hands, you will be happy and know good," and Chassidus* emphasizes: "The effort of your hands, but not that of your head." Deep reflection must be invested in spirituality and not in this domain. Nevertheless, it is clear that one must act to earn a livelihood, and it is regarding this that it is said: "Hashem your Elokim* will bless you in all that you do." And one cannot carry out this action with closed eyes and merely making a gesture with one's hand. One must reflect on how to act, so that the action conforms to its purpose.

I have good hope that in the future, you will follow the path of the Torah*, also in this matter. To earn your livelihood, you will accomplish what, according to the ways of nature, is likely to bring you success. Thus, Hashem will grant you His blessing beyond the natural ways. May Hashem grant that you give me good tidings of all this.

במענה למכתבו מט"ז מ"ח והקודמו, מובן שאין דעתי נוחה כלל מהנראה מבין שיטות מכתבו, שמפני העדר שימת לב הדרושה בעניני פרנסתו, יש איזה פגם בהסחורה שלו, ומלבד הענין דבל תשחית, שגם זהו אזהרתו של הקב"ה כמו שאר המצות, הנה נוסף באלו המפרישים מהריוח שלהם סכומים נכונים לצדקה שהנ"ל נוגע גם בענין הצדקה, ואמת נכון דיוק תורת החסידות, יגיע כפיך כי תאכל אשריך וטוב לך, ולא יגיעת הראש, שכח ההתבוננות העמוקה צריך להיות בענינים רוחנים ולא בהנ"ל, אבל פשוט שעשי' בעניני פרנסה שעלי' נאמר וברכך ה' אלקיך בכל אשר תעשה, אי אפשר שתעשה בעינים סגורות ובכף יד בלבד, כי צריך עכ"פ שכל המעשי, ז.א. העשי' באופן שתתאים למטרת העשי'. ותקותי שעכ"פ להבא ילך בדרך התורה גם בזה, ז.א. שבעניני פרנסה יעשה בזה באופן שגם ע"פ הטבע יצליח, ואז נותן השי"ת ברכתו גם למעלה מהטבע, ויהי רצון שיבשר טוב בהנ"ל...
