Greetings and blessings,

I have received information that pained me. I was told, indeed, that you sometimes drink alcohol without caution, more than is proper, so that all can see that you are intoxicated. Sometimes, all of this even takes place in public, during a Chassidic* gathering (farbrengen*), for example.

You know the words of our holy masters, whose merit protects us, condemning such practices and opposing the consumption of alcohol, except on a joyous occasion and, even then, in moderation. Each person will do so in the manner that is appropriate for him, which means that if one risks becoming intoxicated with a small quantity of alcohol, one must abstain entirely. And if this is required in private, how much more so during a Chassidic* gathering, in public.

Our masters have demanded this for tens of years — that is, several generations — and at the present time, this prohibition retains its full vigor and force. For, on the one hand, each person has the obligation to spread the wellsprings* (note 1: of Chassidus*) outward. You must therefore be particularly careful regarding everything that can have a negative consequence in this matter. On the other hand, it is precisely in this era of the "heel of Moshiach*" (note 2: shortly before his coming) that the darkness is particularly intense. The physical aspect of the body is therefore also particularly strong. Consequently, drunkenness or even simply drinking can strengthen this physical aspect, which risks having negative and even forbidden consequences.

I have good hope that upon receipt of this letter, you will restrain yourself in this matter in the proper fashion. And every time you are in doubt, you will adopt the more restrictive position. I await your good tidings as soon as possible regarding all of this.

With my blessing,

M. Schneerson,
