Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 14 Cheshvan*, in which you tell me that you have begun your studies at the Yeshivah*. However, you do not feel a deep enthusiasm.

As you know, our Sages* teach that "if someone tells you he did not make efforts and nevertheless succeeded, do not believe him." Of course, this effort does not consist merely of questioning. In fact, effort is essentially linked to submission, which is entirely different when one is animated by a deep vitality.

It follows from all this that you must study Torah* with ardor and constancy, to the fullest extent possible, in accordance with the Yeshivah's* schedule, without asking yourself questions, without telling yourself that you must first become filled with enthusiasm and that study will come afterward. Indeed, the opposite is true. And I have good hope that, when you adopt this attitude, the promise of our Sages* will be fulfilled in you: "If you make efforts, they will be crowned with success."

You surely know the three studies that concern everyone. These cover the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya* and are well known. You will also persuade your friends to adopt them.

במענה למכתבו מי"ד חשון, בו כותב אשר נכנס לסדרי הלימודים בישיבה, אולם אינו מרגיש שום חיות פנימי, וכו'.

והנה מפורסמת הודעת חז"ל לא יגעת ומצאת אל תאמין, ומובן שלא השאלה בדבר מה - זוהי יגיעה עלי' מדובר, ולא עוד אלא שיגיעה היא בעיקרו בענינים דקבלת עול ול"ד כשישנו חיות פנימי.

המורם מהאמור, אשר ילמוד בהתמדה ושקידה ככל הדרוש בזמנים דסדרי ישיבה וגם בהשעות אשר בין הסדרים מבלי לפשפש ולדרוש שמקודם צריך להיות חיות ואחרי זה יתחיל הלימוד, כי הסדר הוא להיפך, וכשיתנהג באופן האמור, תקותי שתקוים בו הבטחת חז"ל יגעת ומצאת.

בודאי יודע ושומר שלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים ומשפיע גם על חבריו שי' לעשות כזה.
