Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 9 Marcheshvan*, in which you tell me that you have difficulties earning your livelihood. For this reason, you are thinking of going to the United States. It seems that you intend, for example, to collect funds for an institution.

I have observed that a great number of those who came here unfortunately suffered as a result. They arrived without inquiring beforehand about the conditions. Upon their arrival here, they observed that some of these conditions could be borne only by the strongest. And they could not bring themselves to lower themselves to that degree. Some wanted to, but were unable. I do not even know whether you will manage to cover the expenses of your trip.

Of course, personalities differ and the opportunities that present themselves are not the same — all the more so since you do not specify in your letter what you expect to earn here and what connections you have. I therefore wish only to emphasize that, for various reasons, a detailed, repeated, and thoughtful inquiry is necessary before taking this initiative.

You tell me that you do not know how to free yourself from the straits in which you currently find yourself. Many people who came here in a situation comparable to yours, had they made efforts with the proper motivation to achieve expansiveness on the spot, could not only have saved the travel expenses, but moreover earned a comfortable livelihood in various ways in Eretz Yisrael*, engaged in an activity far more honorable than the one they practice here.

No doubt you are preparing yourself, sufficiently in advance, for the days of Kislev* that are approaching, in particular its festivals and its auspicious days. May Hashem grant you success, materially and spiritually.

במענה למכתבו מט' מ"ח, בו כותב אודות מצב הפרנסה הדחוק, ולכן בדעתו לנסוע לארצוה"ב, וכנראה כוונתו בתור שד"ר וכיו"ב.

והנה ראיתי בכמה מאלו שבאו לכאן של"ע ול"ע נכוו בכגון דא (האבען זיך אפגעבריט), כי נסעו לכאן מבלי לחקור ולדרוש התנאים אשר בזה, ובבואם פה ראו שכמה פרטים הם רק באופן שנפש היפה סובלתם, ולא רצו ואחדים לא יכלו אף שרצו להשפיל עצמם בכגון דא, ומסופקני אם הרויחו אפילו הוצאות הנסיעה.

מובן שאין דיעותיהם שוות ואין כל האפשריות שוות, ובפרט שאין מפרט במכתבו הסיכוים להרויח כאן והקשרים שיש לו, ולא באתי אלא לעוררו שצריך חקירה ודרישה מפורטות וישוב הדעת כ"פ קודם שעושים צעד כהנ"ל, ומכמה טעמים.

ובמ"ש שאינו יודע איך יצא מן המצוקה דעתה, הנה בכגון דא בכמה מאלו שכבר נסעו לכאן, באם היו משתדלים באותה התקיפות עד כדי למסירה ונתינה בהרחבת המצב על אתר, הרי נוסף שהיו מרויחים הוצאות הנסיעה, בטח היו מוצאים כמה ענינים של פרנסה וריוח באה"ק ת"ו ובכבוד יותר מאשר הענינים בהם עוסקים כאן.

בודאי מתכוננים בעוד מועד לימי כסלו הבע"ל בכלל, וביחוד להמועדים ויומא דפגרא אשר בו, ויהי רצון שיהי' בהצלחה בגשמיות וברוחניות.
