To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Moshe Yitzchak,

Greetings and blessings,

I was shown the results of the examinations taken by the students of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* of your city, who came to visit here during this month of Tishrei*, and I took note of them with alarm. It is surely unnecessary to specify the reason for this alarm, since you yourself took these examinations. No doubt you also know the reasons explaining such results, since our Sages* say: "If someone tells you that he made no effort but nevertheless succeeded, do not believe him." And the alarm is even greater when one realizes that everything written on this subject at the beginning of last year has been of strictly no use whatsoever.

I do not know what effect these results have had upon you. I know, however, how you should have taken them. May Hashem grant that I receive good tidings on this subject. You will tell me not only that you know what impression this must make upon you, but also that, concretely, this is indeed the case — in the three domains of the service of Hashem: Torah* study, prayer, and good deeds, representing the totality of the mitzvos*. Indeed, nothing can withstand determination, and according to the well-known saying, "You can, but you do not want to."

May Hashem grant that you give me good tidings of all this, with kindness and mercy. Awaiting your good tidings,

נבהלתי כשהראוני גליון תוצאות הבחינות דתלמידי תו"ת ד... אשר בקרו כאן במשך חדש תשרי העבר בהנוגע אליו, ולפרש סיבת הבהלה אך למותר הוא, כיון שהוא הי' הנבחן, ובודאי ידועות לו ג"כ סיבות תוצאות הבחינה שכללותן הודעת חז"ל, לא יגעת ומצאת אל תאמין, ומה שמוסיף עוד בהבהלה שהוא האומנם שכל מה שנכתב עד"ז בתחלת שנה העברה הי' ללא תועלת כלל.

איני יודע עד כמה פעלו עליו תוצאות הבחינה, אבל יודע אני מה שהי' צריכות לפעול, ויהי רצון שאתבשר טוב, שלא רק שיודע מה שצריכות לפעול אלא שבא זה בפועל בכל שלשת הקוים דתורה עבודה וגמ"ח (כללות המצות) ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון, וכידוע הפתגם מאזשעס דא ניע חאטשעס (יכול אתה אבל אינך חפץ), ויהי רצון שיבשר טוב בהנ"ל בחסד וברחמים.
