To Mr. Avraham Moshe (note 1: A. M. Grinberg, of Bnei Brak; see on his subject letter no. 4937),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 5 Cheshvan*, in which you ask me about chapter 11 of Iggeres HaTeshuvah* of the Alter Rebbe*: how can one envision that sins are committed again between the blessings "Forgive us" and "He Who redeems Israel" (note 2: both pronounced in the Amidah*; in the first, one asks Hashem to forgive sins and one therefore obtains this forgiveness, otherwise it would be a blessing in vain; in the second, one asks Hashem for redemption, which is prevented by our sins, which have therefore not disappeared)?

I do not understand why you interpret the words of the Alter Rebbe* as implying that new sins are committed in this interval. It is clear that when one requests forgiveness from Hashem, He grants it immediately, as soon as one says "Forgive us," for who could prevent Him (note 3: The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "See on this subject tractate Kiddushin* 49b.")? Regarding the redemption, however, it is indeed said: "They will be redeemed immediately," but this term does not receive the same meaning here. Indeed, the redemption has a precise order, since one distinguishes the coming of Eliyahu* the prophet, certain preliminary stages, other subsequent ones, as specified in several Chassidic* discourses of our Sages*. On this subject, the Rambam* also alludes to the redemption following immediately upon teshuvah*, in his Laws of Teshuvah*, chapter 7, paragraph 5.

You surely know the three well-known studies covering the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*. You will adopt them, at least from now on.

With my blessing,
